Ristampa ottocentesca di questo trattato del noto letterato genovese volto a illustrare e formare le virtł civiche di sentimento del bene comune e di partecipazione alla vita pubblica, dato in luce per la prima volta nel 1617. Le idealitą politiche di un trattatista del secolo barocco vengono implicitamente deviate, nella riproposizione dell'opera nella Milano napoleonica, nel senso di un'educazione del cittadino alla fedeltą all'Imperatore. L'edizione doveva costituire il primo volume di una collezione che avrebbe dovuto radunare le pił rare opere che gli Italiani hanno scritte sulla pubblica morale e sulla legislazione. A proposito dell'opera ebbe a dire Lodovico Valeriani nel suo Discorso in fine alla sua traduzione di Tacito (Firenze, 1820, vol. V; la citazione č fatta dal Gamba): Quand'anche non rendesse quest'opera onorevole la soliditą della scienza e la maestria dell'erudizione, dovrebbe aversi assai cara per la vaghezza e puritą dello stile; essendo tale la proprietą de' vocaboli, tale la dignitą delle frasi, tale l'armonica disposizion d'ogni sillaba, e 'l maestoso andamento della sintassi, che poche opere ha pari per venustą. Il Cebą (Genova, 1565-ivi, 1623), di nobile famiglia genovese, fu fecondo poeta in volgare, prevalentemente imitatore, con esiti non disprezzabili, del grande modello del Petrarca (nonché del Ronsard), con una quantitą di liriche dedicate all'amata Aurelia Spinola, morta giovane nel 1596, e a Geronima Di Negro, poi fattasi monaca. Dopo gli studi a Genova e Padova, ove ebbe maestri lo Speroni e Giasone di Nores, nel 1591 entrņ nell'Accademia degli Addormentati, dedicandosi da allora esclusivamente alla professione letteraria.
