"Se potesse aver corso nella grammatica degli studi, l'epiteto di antipatico; Salvator Rosa, nato a Napoli nel 1615, morto a Roma nel '73, è uno degli artisti più antipatici che esista. Egli è tante cose: disegnatore e incisore; pittore d…i paesi e di storie, lettore di testi rari, poeta e poligrafo accigliato, nato sotto Saturno; guitto d'occasione e gran viaggiatore. Il ricco carteggio che si è conservato lo qualifica come un ingegno plurimo, a rischio di dissipazione. In breve: bisogna fare i conti con un personaggio ingombrante. Nell'autoritratto della National Gallery di Londra, egli si presenta come un intellettuale antico: barba incolta, capelli lunghi e cappello floscio, sagomato contro uno sfondo di cielo, fosco come la sua espressione. Nulla rivela il mestiere principale di pittore; le sole informazioni, volutamente spiazzanti, provengono dalle scritta in latino sulla cartella su cui si appoggia: "aut tace aut loquere meliora silentio'. O taci o dici cose migliori del silenzio." (Stefano Causa). Libro.
