First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Edition, first printing. vi, 353 pp; illus. Original cloth. Somewhat worn, else Very Good. 'With the compliments of the author' slip affixed to title page. There were at least three printings of the first edition and there were four editions, but first printings of the first edition are uncommon. Offered with: A.N.S. dated April 14, 1916 to 'My dear Simpson,' and humbly concluding 'I hope you will not be too badly disappointed in the book, but you must not expect too much.' The caption for Fig. 91 (between pp. 138/139) is 'Belted red sow. This breed produced by Q. I. Simpson by crossing black belted (Hampshire) with self red (Tamworth and Duroc) swine.' In his note, Castle thanks Simpson for a print which he is 'sure will reproduce well,' then adds 'She is a fine looking sow,' so I interpret this as Castle using Simpson's print for this figure in the book. I believe he is Q. I. Simpson of Bear Creek Farm, Palmer, Ill., who in 1913 co-authored with Castle 'A family of spotted negroes' (Am. Nat., 47), which is in the bibliography of the book as well as Q. I. Simpson & J. P. Simpson, 'Analytical hybridizing [of swine]' (Proc. Am. Breed. Assn., 7, 1912).
