Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Wrappers. Covers slightly spotted. From the library of the poet David Gascoyne, who is listed as one of the subscribers (with John Heath-Stubbs, James Kirkup, Elizabeth Smart, David Wright and others), with his ballpoint scribble on the last page and the Gascoyne library book-label; loosely inse…rted an undated autograph postcard signed to Gascoyne from the poet Mabel Ferrett (predecessor of Gascoyne"s friend Brian Merrikin Hill as editor of Pennine Platform), making arrangements for an article by Gascoyne on Carpenter for Orbis, the magazine she edited from 1978 to 1980. The Tall Interpreter was first published in 1946: this edition incorporates later poems from the same oeuvre. "This is the complete text of the body of work I started to write in 1946 after the war ended and I was made redundant from the Bristol Aeroplane Factory. The newly liberated working class - that was how we saw the results of the 1945 Labour victory - the newly liberated working class needed an Epic Poetry. I undertook to write it" (introduction). Maurice Carpenter was, like Gascoyne and George Barker, a graduate of the Parton Street Bookshop school, and author of A Rebel in the Thirties (1976). The painter Kit Barker was George's younger brother.
