Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Illustrated by jon gray dj design (illustrator). HARDCOVER. VERY GOOD CONDITION IN GOOD UNCLIPT(L8.99) DUST JACKET.dj has minor rubs, not torn up. ; purple dust jacket.Gold spine titles on dark blue textured hardcovers.Whit endpapers.DJ shows 2" cameo of standing man in casual pose. ; 231pg pages; Meet our memoirist, Augustus Carp, a self-proclaimed "good man" who relishes every opportunity to condemn the weaknesses of others while excusing his own failings. In this spoof autobiography, the pompous narrator enthusiastically recounts his mundane achievements with unwitting hilarity, making frequent asides to bemoan the sins of lesser mortals. Much of the story's ironic humor derives from his delivery; the more seriously Carp takes himself, the more ridiculous he appears.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. David Eccels (illustrator). ### The Folio Society Book -- Augustus Carp, Esq., By Himself: Being the Autobiography of a Really Good Man 1988 1988 ### ### THE FOLIO SOCIETY: This is the 1988 edition. Classified AS NEW: First published May 1924, First published in Bookmasters 1985. The spine is still tight. The typeface is set in 'Monotype' Bell on Edinburgh Antique Laid paper, bound in a red linen cloth; the binding has a printed caricature of Mr Carp Esq, with black embellishments around the oval panel. There are thirteen illustrations by David Eccles and nineteen chapters. ## ## This book is from a private collector and seems unread or just glanced through. ## ## There is more than one obvious route - instant success, through which books achieve the immortality that most writers, however trivial their output, tell themselves is their aim. If it is comforting to see one's name on the spine of a book in some bookshops or on a friend's shelf, It is only a modest inflation to go on, so hope that your book will continue being there when you, the author., are not. But the routes that lead to this desirable status are as strange and incomprehensible as the working of evolution. It would be nice to suppose that some form of cultural Darwinism is at work here and that natural selection ensures that the books which survive are indeed the fittest. One can imagine the memory of our lifetimes reading as some massive subconscious cave system, undiscovered and unlit Lascaux in which the accretions of time form exotic static tights and static mites, and in which some. Odd form of life. Find a permanent perch in the gloom while others vanish as though they have never been.## ## Folio Society Information - The Folio Society is a unique and proudly independent publisher. They make some of the most beautiful books in the World. Folio publishes a broad range of exceptional books, choosing existing titles from the World's great works of fiction and non-fiction. These books are the best within their genre: informed, imaginative and intelligent writing which appeals to a curious mind. ## ## The editions are exquisitely crafted. Each is a work of art, thoughtfully curated and beautifully presented for our worldwide community of book lovers. Folio designs each book to ensure it contains everything the reader could want from an edition. We embrace traditional, long-lasting bookbinding and craft techniques and combine these with innovative design, cutting-edge production methods, and technology. ## ## Whether it be commissioning award-winning illustrations or an insightful introduction, researching a new picture selection, or creating a gorgeously designed and impeccably edited hardback book, Folio sets the standard in modern fine-book publishing.## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. With Illustrations by Robin (Miss Marjorie Blood, later Mother Catherine of the Order of the Sacred Heart) (illustrator). States "First published May 1924 / New Impression November 1924." So, the second printing of the first edition, in red boards, titled in black to spine, NO dust jacket. All eight B&W plates firmly mounted where they ought to be. Humorous fictional autobiography of a self-righteous prig, rediscovered by Anthony Burgess circa 1966 (when he wrote a new introduction for the next known Heinemann printing) and quite a hard book to find in any original, pre-war Heinemann binding. The real author, Sir Henry Howarth Bashford Kt., M.D., F.R.C.P., was reportedly Chief Medical Officer to the Post Office, Medical Adviser to the Treasury, and Honorary Physician to King George VI, while illustrator "Robin" -- who renders most of the characters here as chinless pinheads -- is reliably reported to have actually been Miss Marjorie Blood, a frequent contributor to "Punch," who subsequently joined the Order of the Sacred Heart and became Mother Catherine at Roehampton Convent. 274 pp. Reduced from $550.
