Karl Moriz Diesing (1800-1867) Austrian naturalist and zoologist, specializing in the study of helminthology. Karl Moriz Diesing, "zu Wien, berühmter Helrainthologo, war am 16. Juni 1800 zu Krakau geboren, wurde in Lemberg erzogen, studirte von 1819 in Wien Medicin, wurde aber gleichzeitig immer mächtiger von den Natur-Wissenschaften angezogen, so dass er schon seit 1822 bei der helminthologischen Abtheilung des kaiserlichen zoologischen Cabinete, unter Leitung Jon. Gottfr. Bremser's, unentgeltlich Dienste leistete. Im Jahre 1826 erlangte er die medicinische Doctorwürde mit einer pharmakologischen Diss.: "De nucis vomicae principio efficaci", wurde Assistent bei der Lehrkanzel der Botanik, erhielt 3 Jahre später eine Anstellung am k. k. Naturaliencabinet und rückte bis 1843 in die Stelle des 1. Custos-Adjuncten auf. Niemand war für eine derartige Stellung befähigter als er, der in den weiten Gebieten der Botanik, Mineralogie und Zoologie die umfassendsten Kenntnisse besass. Als der glänzendste Vertreter der Wiener helminthologischen Schule nach Bremser's Tode gab er seine auf vieljährigen mühevollen Studien beruhendes, alle Kenntnisse auf dem bezüglichen Gebiete zusammenfassendes "Systema helminthum" (2 Bde. Wien 1860, 1851) auf Kosten der kaiserl. Akademie der Wissenschaften heraus, ein epochemachendes, für alle Zeiten in der Geschichte der Zoologie einen wichtigen Markstein bildendes Werk. Leider wurde er durch ein inzwischen eingetretenes, in Folge seiner angestrengten Arbeiten mit dem Mikroskop im Zunehmen begriffenes und bis zur völligen Erblindung gesteigertes Augenleiden verhindert, den 3. Band jenes Werkes zu vollenden. Bereits 1852 musste er pensionirt werden, und doch findet sich nach dieser Zeit noch bis zum Jahre 1865 eine grosse Reihe von Abhandlungen von ihm namentlich in den Denkschriften und den Sitzungsberichten der mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlichen Classe der kais. Akademie veröffentlicht, die zusammengenommen einen Band mit 26 prachtvollen Tafeln bilden würden. Es wurde dieses Weiterarbeiten auch nach erfolgter Erblindung nur durch sein staunenswerth treues Gedätchtniss und die seltene Aufopferung und Unterstützung eines jüngeren gelehrten Freundes, Aug. v.
