Von 1922 bis 1937 war er dann Generalmusikdirektor in Stuttgart und bis 1945 auch Lehrer an der dortigen Musikhochschule. Mehrfach in dieser Zeit war er auch Musikassistent bei den Bayreuther Festspielen. 1937-51 leitete er gleichzeitig das Institut für Musikwissenschaften an der Universität Tübingen. 1940 sollte er als Nachfolger Peter Raabes die Präsidentschaft der Reichsmusikkammer übernehmen, wurde aber von Goebbels als "etwas zu wissenschaftlich" abgelehnt. Bis 1920 war er Solorepetitor und Kapellmeister an der Oper in Hannover, anschließend Erster Kapellmeister am Nationaltheater Weimar. 1921 wurde er zum Professor ernannt und 1922 Generalmusikdirektor in Stuttgart.Während der NS-Zeit wurde er 1937 Leiter des Musikwissenschaftlichen Instituts der Universität Tübingen. 1940 war er als Präsident der Reichsmusikkammer vorgesehen, wurde jedoch von Goebbels abgelehnt. Von 1942 bis 1944 dirigierte er Konzerte im besetzten Paris und lehrte bis 1945 an der Musikhochschule Stuttgart. Nach 1945 setzte er seine Lehrtätigkeit in Tübingen fort und ging 1951 in den Ruhestand.
