Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. On offer is a distinctive first edition of Marjorie Wilkins Campbell's The North West Company (New York: Macmillan-St. Martin's Press, 1957), preserving a unique history of close reading and active historical inquiry. This extensively annotated volume contains tipped-in newspaper clippings and, most remarkably, a highly significant 1953 letter from the wife of a pioneering British Columbia surgeon that details both literary critique and early cardiac medical history. Provenance & Active Research The book bears the ownership inscription of Clendon Albert Pierce McDowell, an RCAF veteran and educator. A Christmas 1957 presentation inscription from his wife, Frances, sets the tone for the entire collection: "For Clen who is ever in search of historical accuracy and fuller information." The pages are filled with pencil and ink underlining, marginal dates, and corrections. For instance, a note regarding Charlotte Small's marriage clarifies, "she was 13 not 14 until Sept." The book clearly served as a lifelong working reference; one annotation even directs the reader to Elizabeth Clutton-Brock's 1972 book Woman of the Paddle Song. Frances McDowell herself used this very copy to correct the public record. Included is a 1967 clipping from a Toronto Telegram quiz, alongside Frances's letter to the editor challenging their facts about Fort William and directly citing pages 270-280 of this book as proof. The 1953 Medical & Literary Letter A major highlight of this offering is a tipped-in 1953 letter from Mary Higinbotham Robertson to her sister Phyllis. Mary was the daughter of noted Canadian West pioneer John David Higinbotham, and the wife of Dr. Ross Robertson, a pioneering BC surgeon who would later participate in Vancouver General Hospital's first open-heart surgery in 1957. Mary's letter provides incredible contemporary medical history, detailing her husband's grueling thoracic and cardiac surgical workload. She reports on a lung cancer operation, a mitral valve commissurotomy, and the dilation of a newborn infant's esophagus mere hours after birth. Alongside these striking medical reports, Mary—having personal connections to author Marjorie Wilkins Campbell and her five sisters—provides a candid assessment of Campbell's writing, describing it as "correctly written but lacking in picturesqueness." This makes the letter an exceptional piece of literary reception history. Additional Ephemera The book also includes a 1959 clipping reporting Campbell's $4,500 Guggenheim Fellowship for fur-trade research, a review of The North West Company by Heather Robertson, and color magazine pages featuring Canadian fur trappers. Condition This is a well-used, extensively annotated working copy retaining its original dust jacket. The jacket shows wear and small tears (now housed in a protective plastic cover). The binding remains intact but shows cracking from active use. The extensive markings, underlining, and marginalia are essential to the documentary character of this unique copy, elevating it from a standard first edition to a rich historical artifact. Overall Good+ condition. Highly appealing to collectors of Canadian fur-trade historiography, women's correspondence, and British Columbia medical history.…
