Erede della lunga…e fondamentale esperienza di «La Riviera Ligure», «Circoli» fece la sua comparsa nel 1931 con il numero di gennaio-febbraio. Stampata a Genova dallo Stabilimento Grafico Editoriale, il bimestrale e poi mensile (ma con periodicità irregolare) di poesia fondato e guidato da Adriano Grande vedeva in quel primo numero un comitato di redazione formato da Angelo Barile, Guglielmo Bianchi, Giacomo Debenedetti, Eugenio Montale, Camillo Sbarbaro e Sergio Solmi. Una composizione direttiva destinata a cambiare dopo le prime sei uscite del 1931: all'inizio della seconda annata, infatti, direttori diventano lo stesso Grande e Guglielmo Bianchi, con il comitato di redazione non più presente. Tornerà soltanto con il numero 1 del 1934, formato di nuovo da Barile, Bianchi e Solmi affiancati da Giacomo Prampolini e Raffaello Prati, per poi allargarsi nel tempo includendo Carlo Bernard, Attilio Dabini, Enrico Falqui, Marcello Gallian, Indro Montanelli, Glauco Natuli, Giuseppe Ungaretti, con la direzione sempre affidata a Grandi e, dal 1937, anche a Giuseppe Agnino. E a variare saranno anche la sede - spostata a Roma a partire dal fascicolo di marzo-aprile del 1934 e la veste grafica, con modifiche al formato e alle brossure. Ma al di là delle vicende editoriali, a rendere preziose le otto annate di «Circoli» - dal 1931 al numero 12 del 1939, con una sospensione per tutto il 1936 è la ricchezza letteraria e poetica che seppe raccogliere, divenendo di fatto una delle riviste più importanti del Novecento italiano. Soprattutto nel periodo 1931-1934, le sue pagine ospitarono infatti non soltanto poesie e testi degli "interni" Montale, Sbarbaro, Grande, Barile, ma anche di Quasimodo, Pea, Sinisgalli, De Pisis, Stuparich, Bertolucci, Penna, Malaparte, Longanesi. Grande l'attenzione rivolta alla letteratura straniera, con traduzioni di Joyce, Hemingway, George Stefan, Eliot, Dos Passos e il numero speciale del novembre-dicembre 1933 interamente dedicato alla poesia americana. Un'attività intensa e di altissimo livello, che nel 1932 porterà alla creazione delle Edizioni di "Circoli", per i cui tipi vedranno la luce, tra i tanti, «Nuvole sul greto» di Grande, l'opera prima di Angelo Barile «Primasera», «Tempo di pace» di Marcello Gallian, «I morti di Bligny giocano a carte» di Malaparte e «Oboe sommerso» di Salvatore Quasimodo. Arrivata al 1939, la rivista registrò l'addio - per "ragioni amministrative" - del fondatore e direttore Adriano Grande con il numero di settembre, giungendo infine alla sua definitiva chiusura con il numero 12 del dicembre dello stesso anno.
