Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. THE SCULPTURE AND MURAL DECORATIONS OF THE EXPOSITION A. STIRLING CALDER 1915 1ST. I am very pleased to offer a lovely book-a tour de force for the world of sculpture at the beginning of the twentieth century. The book is titled: The Sculpture and Mural Decorations of the Exposition A Pictorial Survey of the Art of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition which was held in San Francisco. It opens with an Introduction by A. Stirling Calder who at the time was the Acting Chief of Sculpture of the Exposition. Of course, I immediately looked him up on Wikipedia because of the Calder name and here is what I found: Alexander Stirling Calder (January 11, 1870 January 7, 1945) was an American sculptor and teacher. He was the son of sculptor Alexander Milne Calder and the father of sculptor Alexander (Sandy) Calder of the Kinetic Art movement. His granddaughter Sandra Calder is also an artist illustrating children s books. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 x 8 ¾ inches 205 pages) was published by Paul Elder and Company of San Francisco dated 1915 and a First Edition. It is lavishly illustrated with almost 100 tipped-in black-and-white photos of the many pieces of art which went into the Exposition. The book is bound in tan buckram boards with embossed and gilt titles on cover and spine. There is a bookseller s paste-in label on the rear endpaper for The White House Books in Various Languages of San Francisco. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are a bit dust-dulled and the gilt titles faded but still legible. Those on the spine are darkened and being rather small a bit difficult to make out. There is some rubbing to the edges of the book but nothing extreme. The corners and spine tips are bumped again not badly. Inside a former owner has left her name on the first blank page but that is the only mark I found in the book. The interior pages and countless tipped-in photos are clean and bright without toning or foxing. The front hinge is starting but the rear is intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
