Inscription to a Duke, from an Admiral. In addition to photographs of Indigenous People and rivers and shores there are artist drawings that depict passages in the text. So this is a deluxe 1927 reprint of the 1801 edition. The long title continues: .with a preliminary account of the rise, progress, and present state of the fur trade of that country. Mathers, C. Contents mostly very good, no inscriptions etc. photographic illustrations are glued to centre of the page. Minor page edge wear, all photographic illustrations are in very good condition. Mathers was one of the earliest and at times only professional photographer in Edmonton, Canada, In 1901 he made an epic journey, he travelled mostly with traders of the Hudson's Bay Company to Canada's North West Territories, and was able to take the first professional photographs of the Inuit tribes. Some with names and with various details written within the image at the bottom of each phototograph. Dated inside cover 1902 Edmonton before he moved to Vancouver in 1904. A collection of forty-two photographs of Edmonton, glued directly to pages. All pictures are 5 3/4" x 7 3/4," black and white photographs. Also includes one 5 3/4" x 15 1/2" blac…k and white panorama photograph of Edmonton at front of collection. All pictures offer description printed at bottom in white ink along with with C.M. Mathers. Collection includes street scenes, schools, hospitals, churches, Old Fort Edmonton, and various residences. Also shown are a steamboat on the Saskatchewan, coal miners, gold washing, a plowman, Red River cart, and other scenes of country life. A few photographs highlight the fur trade and Indigenous peoples, including a fur sorting room, sled dogs, and Cree and Sarcee people posing for photographs. Born in Lucknow, Ontario in 1868, Charles Wesley Mathers moved to Edmonton in 1891. One of the earliest photographers in Edmonton, Mathers not only photographed the growing city but life in other parts of northern Canada at the turn of the 20th century. In 1901 he accompanied William H. Connor, an independent trader from Edmonton to the mouth of the Mackenzie River and along the river routes of the Northwest Territories. Mathers documented his trip, photographing hunting and trading activities for a souvenir album called "The Far West." Mathers passed away in California in 1950. Edges of wrappers and spine are chipped. Pages lightly worn from handling, but pictures are fine.

Mathers began his photographic career with the Edmonton branch studio of the Calgary photographic partnership of Boorne & Ma…y. According to Alberta photohistorian Brock Silversides, Mathers was Edmonton's only photographer for several years, including the first two years of the Klondike Gold Rush. In 1901 he travelled with a Hudson's Bay Company trader to Fort MacPherson on the Peel River, N.W.T., the first trading post north of the Arctic circle, and was able to take the first professional photographs of Inuit in the region. Mathers sold his business in 1904 and moved to Vancouver, B.C. Included here are albertypes of scenery around Fort McPherson on Peel River and Fort Good Hope on the Mackenzie River, Inuit kayaking and dogsledding, HBC Steamer Wrigley on the Mackenzie River, native Dogribs at Great Slave Lake, portaging and rapid-running, HBC Post Chippewyan on Lake Athabasca, the Athabasca River, &c.
