Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book dives into the properties of silica refractories made from Illinois novaculite and quartzite sandstone. The author gives particular attention to the nature and rate of inversion of the minerals, as well as mechanical strength in relation to particle size, packing, and fluxes. Having first defined the conditions of crushing to yield the desired grain sizes and proportions of these sizes to furnish the minimum voids, the author explores the mechanical strengths of such mixtures and the effects of various bonds or accelerators. The author concludes that the grain size distribution has a very marked influence upon the physical properties of the brick and that for maximum resistance to spalling, the balance between elasticity and mechanical strength must be correct, and these properties are both largely dependent upon the particle size grading. By studying and understanding these concepts, the author posits that it is possible to make silica refractories with the ideal composition to meet specific needs. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
