The photographer/author -- a retired American diplomat in his sixties -- became enamored with youth culture after attending a Beatles concert in 1965. In an attempt to understand what was going on -- 'A person is only old when he has lost his interest in young people' is the opening quote in the book -- he began making street portraits and interviewing his subjects. "[T]he whole tenor of the book is one of innocence and appreciation rather than the prurient leering of a dirty old man. First and foremost, this is a celebration of beauty, and it is a valuable social document, a unique snapshot of an era when it was especially exciting to be young.
