Bunsen's studies of the composition of gases given off from blast furnaces showed that 50 to 80 percent or more of the heat was wasted and led to elaboration of his methods of measuring volumes of gases in this, his only publication. The book examines the basic physical and chemical properties of gases, including their compressibility, expansion, density, diffusion, and combustion. It served as a foundational text for understanding gas behavior through experimental techniques and calculations. He further predicted that spectral analysis could aid in the discovery of new elements that might exist in too small quantities or be too similar to known elements to be identifiable by traditional chemical techniques. Spectral analysis led to Bunsen and Kirchhoff s announcement in 1860 of a new alkali metal, cesium, detected in a few drops of the alkaline residue from an analysis of mineral water obtained from Durkheim. August 1899 in Heidelberg) Chemiker, entwickelte zusammen mit Gustav Robert Kirchhoff die Spektralanalyse, mit deren Hilfe chemische Elemente hochspezifisch nachgewiesen werden können. Er perfektionierte den nach ihm benannten Bunsenbrenner und erfand das Bunsenelement und das Bunsen-Fotometer.

Christian Leopold von Buch (1774-bei Angermünde (Uckermark) geboren. Als Student der Bergakademie (1790-1793) und Schüler von Professor Werner zählt Buch zu ihren bedeutensten Absolventen. Buch wurde später zum Anhänger der Theorie des Vulkanismus (gegen Werners Neptunismus gerichtet) und prägte den Begriff Leitfossil.
