The maps were published on pages 35, 45, and 57 of C. S. Forester's The Hornblower Companion (subtitled "An Atlas and Personal Commentary on the Writing of the Hornblower Saga with illustrations and maps by Samuel Bryant"). The work was first published in 1964. There are additional vignettes which are published within the text, and one unpublished example. Samuel Hanks Bryant (1906-1996) was an American illustrator and artist specialising in naval and military subjects. He largely worked for the Houghton Mifflin Company where he was involved with numerous publications including Churchill's The Second World War, and, later, Tolkien's The Road Goes Ever On. The maps offered here comprise: Map 17 ("The Mediterranean"). There are five additional vignettes, of which four are published on p. 34. Map 22 ("Second Engagement Between Lydia and Natividad"). There are three additional vignettes, which are published on p. 44. Map 28 ("Riga"). There are three additional vignettes, which are published on p. 56. Original drawings (maps c. 335 x 246 mm) on "Bainbridge Board" artist's board (c. 470 x 365 mm). Drawn in ink, with some corrections in gouache, occasional lettering panels laid down, some transfer lettering, each board signed ("Samuel H. Bryant"). Two maps with tracing paper covers with artist's marks. All with black paper covers bearing map number. Together with printed book. Some occasional adhesive tape marks, occasional browning to transfer lettering, short tears to tracing paper, minor loss to black paper covers; fine and unfaded drawings, together with a fine copy of the printed book in a near-fine jacket.
