Tobias alias Hyme Tobias, whose photograph and specimens of whose handwriting appear above, is 28 years of age, having been born in New York City, March 28th, 1885. He is about five feet eight inches in height, weighs about 145 pounds, has black eyes, coal black hair, very thick and inclined to curl - so thick it is hard to comb - wears it medium long. Olive complexion; skin rather rough; could grow a thin beard or mustache; shaves about once a week; has at times peculiar discolored marks under the skin on his face which might be mistaken for scratches. Above photograph taken about a year ago is a good likeness. He walks fast and is erect, swings his arms when walking, seldom looks back or turns around. Smokes domestic cigars from 10 to 15 per day; does not chew tobacco or use cigarettes; drinks beer occasionally; reads the Sporting News and Cincinnati Enquirer; keeps up with performances of race horses and plays the races, especially through book-makers. Speech low and even; slow to make acquaintances; while apparently slow in his work is in fact fast and methodical. Wears No. 7 1/4 shoes and 7 1/8 hat; wore dark blue or black suit and long black overcoat, with soft black hat. Is a Jew and by occupation a railway clerk and accountant. Has worked as collector in retail shoe store and may seek office work of any kind. He has a mother, father and two brothers in Dallas, Texas, and two brothers in Houston, Texas. He left Dallas, Texas, February 1st, 1913, and is supposed to have taken with him a considerable sum of money. If this man is located he should be arrested as a fugitive from justice and prompt notice given to the undersigned or to M. C. Kahn, Special Agent, Houston & Texas Central Railroad Company, Houston, Texas. B. F. BRANDENBURG, Sheriff, Dallas County, Dallas, Texas." [oval purple ink stamp at very top, stamped over the text "$250.00 Reward":] "RECEIVED MAR 13 1914 S. P. CO. SAN FRANCISCO, CAL." [S. P. CO. stands for the Southern Pacific Company (Southern Pacific Railroad). The poster mentions the fugitive was wanted by the Houston & Texas Central Railroad Company (H&TC). The Southern Pacific Company acquired a controlling interest in the H&TC. This copy of the poster was received and processed by the Southern Pacific Railroad corporate or security offices in San Francisco, California on March 13, 1914, roughly one year after Hyman A. Tobias fled Dallas.] This poster was officially authorized by Benjamin F. Brandenburg, who served as the Sheriff of Dallas County from 1912 to 1916. The crime targeted the Houston & Texas Central Railroad Company, a major economic lifeline in Texas during that era. Hyman A. Tobias was eventually apprehended, returned to Texas to face charges issued by the Dallas County Sheriff and the Houston & Texas Central Railroad. He was convicted for his multi-city offenses of forgery, embezzlement, and theft and served time in prison. The handwriting samples in the middle are typical of early 20th-century investigative techniques. Before modern digital fingerprinting, freight waybill numbers and specific merchant names (such as Sanger Bros, a prominent historic Texas department store) (illustrator).
