Good with some general wear and rubbing, joints partially cracked but still holding very firmly, leather chipped to head/tail of the spine and bottom corners. Cont…ents good and tight, inscribed RFC to the title page which is also a little age soiled, small contemporary bookplate of Cary (This is the Cary family of the Channel Islands and the bookplate bears their motto "sine macula" i.e. without blemish and depicts "a swan argent, wings endorsed"); paper toned with slight foxing. Generally a very good tight copy. Size: Small 8vo (11 X 17cm). Book.

Karl IX . ernannte ihn 1573 zum Generalanwalt des Parlaments . Sein Nachfolger Heinrich III . setzte besonderes Vertrauen in Brisson, der 1573 zum erst…en Fiskalbeamten ernannt, 1580 zum Président à mortier befördert, 1588 zum sechsten Präsidenten des Parlaments ernannt und ihm anvertraut wurde mit mehreren diplomatischen Vertretungen. Als die französischen Religionskriege erneut aufflammten, blieb Brisson in Paris, nachdem die royalistischen Richter des Parlaments am 16. Januar 1589 aus der Stadt geflohen waren, gefolgt vom König, der am 13. Mai 1588 geflohen war "), eine Gruppe von Honoratioren der Liga , die jetzt Paris regierte, setzte Brisson als Ersatz für Achille de Harlay als Ersten Präsidenten des Parlaments ein . Als Politiker versuchte Brisson, zwischen den Kriegsparteien zu vermitteln. Die Seize begannen jedoch bald, ihm zu misstrauen, weil sie ihn als loyal gegenüber Henry betrachteten. Folglich ließen sie ihn von einem Sondergericht zum Tode verurteilen und 1591 durch den Strang hinrichten .- Etwas gebräunt, ansonsten gut erhaltenes Exemplar. Barnabe Brisson…(1531-1591) was an important French jurist and philologist born in Fontenay in Poictou. He distinguished himself at the bar of the parliament and attracted the notice of Henry III of France who made him his advocate-general, then counselor to the state. In 1580, he was appointed as President of Parliament. He was employed by the King in several negotiations and was sent as ambassador to England. When Paris was besieged by Henry IV, Brisson remonstrated with the leaguers but they were dissatisfied with his loyalty and he was strangled in prison. At the age of 26 he published a notable work on the terminology of civil law and later wrote a work on the legal formulae of Rome. The present work consists of two treatises on the marriage rites, customs and laws of ancient Rome, citing material from a wide range of classical sources including Catullus, Cicero, Horace, Martial, Plutarch and Virgil.
