Contact seller5-star sellerSoft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine, as noted; see description and scans. San Francisco: The Sierra Club, 1957. The June, 1957 issue of The Sierra Club Bulletin, that being Volume 42, Number 6. Octavo, glosst perfect-bound wraps, 92 pp. Fine, as originally received, though as-originally-received in this specific case…did include tiny micro wear at the top edge, front cover - barely visible in that scan, which see. Otherwise, flawless. Extraordinarily handsome example. Cover photo, by Cedric Wright, is of the John Muir Trail in the High Sierra; the theme of the issue - Wildlife in Our Civilization - was that of the Fifth Biennial Wildlife Conference, from which most of this issue's content was taken. The SC doing its environmental activism early and often, as it always has, so much better than so many others. There is no "civilization" in the normal sense within, of course; just gorgeous photos by masters like Wright, Philip Hyde, David Simmons and Lee Talbot, with memorable accompanying text (see scan of contents page for details) by those gentlemen as well as David R. Brower, A. Starker Leopold, Lowell Sumner, William Bridge Cook, Don M. Wilson and of course editor August Frugé, on topics including the Northern Cascades, Beavers, Wilderness Fung, Spider Rock and much else. The photography is, of course, a very impressive tour de force by the mentioned foursome. Please see scans. LSC2. Cedric Wright, Philip Hyde, David Simmons, Lee Talbot (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Presumed First Edition. Format is approximately 9.25 inches by 12 inches. 221, [3] pages. This work is profusely illustrated with 553 full-color photographs of animals by renowned photographers. Introduction by Dr. Richard Leakey. Bibliography and suggested additional… reading. Inscribed and signed on the front free endpaper by the author, David Anderson, and by Dr. Richard Leakey's wife, Lynne Leakey. The inscriptions read: To Norma: Thank you for contributing to the conservation of Africa's wildlife. David Anderson; Dear Norma: Wishing you will join us in Kenya one day. Best Regards, Lynne Leakey, 5/Dec/95. Some scuffing to dust jacket. One page of ephemera on Lynne Leakey. With the world's wild areas under steadily-increasing pressure from an ever-expanding human population, 'Focus On Africa: Wildlife, Conservation & Man' combines the best images of 136 photographers to eight African countries from Kenya to South Africa with a thoughtful and balanced examination of the problem - its origins & possible solution. Opening with an essay by Dr. Richard Leakey, the book includes revealing views from African guides & informative profiles of the eight countries visited. The quality of the photographs stands comparison with any on the market, but more than that, the project created a venue in which ordinary people could do more than just talk about a world problem.
