He wrote for San Diego newspapers including the Coast Dispatch and the San Diego Union and taught Journalism and Photography at Mira Costa College. Brian was an avid surfer, back packer, bicyclist, and gardener. In his final years, he became a painter, creating a 60-foot sea-based allegorical mural inspired by the teachings of Alcoholics Anonymous.
