Martin Michael Branner (December 28, 1888 May 19, 1970), known to his friends as Mike Branner, was a cartoonist who created the comic strip Winnie Winkle. In 1905, Martin Branner was an assistant to two men who booked vaudeville acts. He was a dancer who met Edith Fabbrini (18921966) when he was 18 and she was 15. They married a few days after they met, and the couple then entered vaudeville as a dance team. They spent 15 years performing in stock, musical comedy and vaudeville on the Keith Orpheum and Pantages circuits. Some of Branner's earliest artwork was published during this period when he did advertising illustrations for Variety. Branner launched Winnie Winkle the Breadwinner as a daily strip in September 1920, followed by a Sunday page in 1923. Edith Branner served as the model for the character of Winnie Winkle. By 1939, Winnie Winkle the Breadwinner was printed in 125 newspapers in America and Europe for a combined circulation of more than eight and a half million. The title was shortened to Winnie Winkle in 1943. Branner's long-time assistant was Max Van Bibber, who took over Winnie Winkle after Branner suffered a stroke in 1962. Branner began to use a wheelchair. Without the use of his right hand, he continued to draw with his left. In 1957, Branner was a guest challenger on the television panel show To Tell the Truth. Branner wrote and drew Winnie Winkle from 1920 to 1962, receiving the National Cartoonists Society Humor Comic Strip Award in 1958. Winnie Winkle and the Diamond Heirlooms by Branner and Helen Berke was a 248-page hardcover novel published by Whitman in 1946. In answer to her friend's urgent call Winnie WInkle cancels her vacation plans and goes to Chicago, only to be hurried off to a lonely farm in search of a hidden legacy. Although held prisoners by two crooks, Winnie and her friends Mary Dee and Tommy, manage to outwit their jailers, search out the hidden legacy, and escape with their treasure intact. Authorized Edition [stated]. [As an 'original story' presumed first edition]. Presumed first printing. Martin Branner (illustrator).

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. An attractive surviving copy of one of Whitman's collectible Authorized Editions based on popular American newspaper comic strips. This original mystery-adventure novel features Winnie Winkle, the pioneering comic-strip heroine created by Martin Bran…ner, whose long-running syndicated strip debuted in 1920 and became one of the defining newspaper comics of the twentieth century. Branner both illustrated this volume and provided the visual continuity that collectors associate with the classic strip. The story follows Winnie as a cancelled vacation turns into a hunt for hidden diamonds, secret inheritances, kidnappings, and country-house intrigue. Whitman's Authorized Editions transformed successful comic-strip and entertainment properties into juvenile novels, making complete copies with their original jackets increasingly desirable today. Branner later received the National Cartoonists Society's Humor Comic Strip Award (1958), and original Winnie Winkle artwork is preserved in both the Smithsonian Institution and Syracuse University's Special Collections. Condition: Book: Near Fine. Dust Jacket: Very Good+. Clean, tight, and square with sharp gilt lettering and attractive green cloth boards. Binding is sound with no loose pages observed. Interior remains exceptionally clean with only light, uniform age toning to the paper typical of wartime Whitman publications. Illustrated endpapers are bright and complete. A small pencil notation ("39") appears at the upper corner of the title page. Dust jacket retains outstanding color with only light edge wear, minor rubbing at the extremities, a few tiny chips at the spine ends and corners, light toning to the white rear panel, and a short closed tear at the upper edge. Small bump present to the bottom boards (see photos.) Not price-clipped. An especially attractive copy of a fragile juvenile title seldom found with such a bright original jacket. This is the 1946 Authorized Edition, first edition/first printing published by Whitman as No. 2319. The title page, copyright page, publisher's advertisements, and jacket all correspond with the original 1946 issue. Whitman generally did not identify later printings in the modern manner, and no evidence of a later reprint is present. Martin Branner's Winnie Winkle was historically significant because Winnie was one of the earliest independent working women in American newspaper comics, helping redefine female protagonists in popular culture during the 1920s and beyond. This novel represents an interesting crossover between newspaper comics and Whitman's postwar juvenile fiction program, preserving Branner's illustrations in book form. Copies retaining the vivid yellow dust jacket are considerably scarcer than jacketless examples because these inexpensive children's books were heavily read and their jackets frequently discarded. Martin Branner (illustrator).
