Experiments by de Does with a typographical ornament and its mirror image in vignettes, borders, and patterns. The Arabic word kaba means "cube" when translated into English. The idea became the basis of a 30-year, sketch based investigation into the seemingly endless combinations of this graphic form for the late Dutch typographer and type design Bram de Does. The collection of work presents a seemingly endless combination of patterns, ornaments, and borders built on a single abstract asymmetric form (and it's mirror version) designed by de Does. Original notes documenting his method of construction and approach to this multi-decade project accompany the abstract ornaments and original sketches. A Fine copy.

The contributions, in a wide variety of formats, consist of typographic ornaments, and many are numbered and signed. 175 sets were produced. Letterpress-printed from metal type-including all of the arrangements of his Kaba ornament-this is book is a monument to both meticulous composition and seeing what is possible. We are impressed. The facsimile of the letter, by 'Jan', dated 'Heemstede 12 March 1947', is on both sides of the first leaf. Biograpical printed text by Dreyfus on recto of second leaf, the verso of which is blank.

We moesten er even op puzzelen, maar de uitgave werd als éen groot vel uitgebracht en de koper werd uitgenodigd er zelf een boekje van de maken. Het zijn dus allemaal unicaten. Dit exemplaar werd voorzien van een blauw omslag waarop in wit en zwart in biljetletters de titel is gedrukt.
