Questa edizione giuntina è la prima apparsa dopo che l'opera di Boccaccio era stata messa all'indice. La Curia richiese perciò ad un gruppo di "deputati" di rimaneggiare il testo per renderlo di nuovo fruibile al pubblico. Secondo la teoria più accreditata i deputati furono Vincenzo Borghini, Bastiano Antinori, Angelo Guicciardini, Antonio Benivieni. L'anno successivo venne pubblicato il qui unito "Annotationi e discorsi" in cui gli stessi tentarono di giustificare a livello filologico le scelte compiute nella correzione del testo originale. Titolo completo "Il Decameron di messer Giovanni Boccacci cittadino fiorentino. Ricorretto in Roma, et emendato secondo l'ordine del sacro Conc. di Trento, et riscontrato in Firenze con testi antichi & alla sua vera lezione ridotto da' deputati di loro alt. ser. Nuovamente stampato. (unito a:) Annotationi et discorsi sopra alcuni luoghi del Decameron, di m. Giovanni Boccacci. Fatte dalli molto magnifici sig. deputati da loro Altezze Serenissime, sopra la correttione di esso Boccaccio, stampato l'anno 1573". This Giuntina edition is the first to appear after Boccaccio's work was put on the index. The Curia therefore asked a group of "deputies" to rework the text to make it accessible to the public again. According to the most accredited theory, the deputies were Vincenzo Borghini, Bastiano Antinori, Angelo Guicciardini, Antonio Benivieni.
