"Walking The Flinders Ranges is one of the most comprehensive, closely textured, and affectionate books ever to be written about any area of Australia. It was inspired by the fact that Warren, who has been fascinated by the Flinders for many years, at least decided to be the first to walk them from end to end. Warren Bonython's book is one to be enjoyed for its own sake, and will be an invaluable descriptive text and guide for anyone who wishes to follow in his footsteps through any stretch of the Flinders Ranges. Contains plenty of text, photograph and some maps aswell.

The narrative is celebrated for being comprehensive, closely textured, and richly affectionate toward the Flinders Ranges. Content and Features: Pages and Format: The book contains approximately 231-232 pages, with editions featuring colour and black-and-white plates, maps, diagrams, and illustrated endpapers. Cultural Insights: Bonython includes detailed accounts of Aboriginal heritage, such as cave paintings at Moonarie Gap, rock carvings near Mount Elkington, and the Aboriginal legend of the great snake Arkaroo. He also recounts encounters and practical experiences involving Aboriginal station hands and historical interactions. Walking Guidance: It serves as both a memoir and a practical walking guide, describing routes, geographic features, and the challenges of the terrain. For instance, it includes guidance on traversing steep gorges, the beetling stone gully of Mount Aleck, and granite ledges of The Armchair. .

Book (1) Walking the Flinders Ranges. Book condition is near fine. Hard cover. Dust jacket near fine, no tear and clean. Book block is clean, sun stain colour. Book boards clean & unmarked front and back of the book. Spine intact. Over-all a great and neat copy. Walking the Flinders Ranges by C. Warren Bonython is a classic Australian travelogue and bushwalking memoir, first published in 1971. It chronicles Bonython s ambitious journey to walk the entire length of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia a rugged, remote, and stunningly beautiful region stretching over 400 kilometres. Here s what makes the book remarkable: The Journey: Bonython began his trek in May 1967 at Crystal Brook and reached Mount Hopeless in November 1968, completing the walk in 10 stages over 74 days. He faced extreme conditions: dust storms, hail, freezing nights, and scorching days sometimes carrying 65-pound backpacks loaded with supplies and water. He often buried water and oranges along the route ahead of time to survive the arid stretches. The Landscape & Legacy. The book is rich with descriptions of gorges, ridges, and valleys, and includes reflections on flora, fauna, geology, and Aboriginal heritage, such as rock carvings and legends. Bonython s walk inspired the creation of the Heysen Trail, one of Australia s most iconic long-distance walking tracks. Personal Touches: He brought along fine teas to elevate the bushwalking experience, though he admitted the mineralized water sometimes dulled the flavor. His walking stick a flowering stem of a yacca later became a tent pole and eventually a wine cellar spacer. That s some serious repurposing. If you re into adventure, nature writing, or Aussie history, this book is a gem. Book (2) Flinders Rangers South Australia: The Art of Photography. sIGNED BY AUTHOR. Book condition is near fine. Hard cover. Dustjacket near fine. Book boards & block clean. Spine intact. Text body clean & unmarked throughout the book. Over-all a great and neat copy of the book. Stavros Pippos is a stunning tribute to one of South Australia's most iconic landscapes. First published in 1993 by Endeavour Publishing, this large-format hardcover book features full-page, full-colour photographs that capture the rugged beauty and diverse landforms of the Flinders Ranges. Here s what makes it special: Visual Elegance: Pippos s photography showcases the dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, the textures of ancient rock formations, and the serene expanses of the outback. Personal Insight: Each image is paired with thoughtful text that blends factual information with Pippos s personal reflections, offering readers both a visual and emotional journey through the region. Artistic Legacy: The book is considered a collector s item and a fine example of photographic artistry rooted in Australian landscape tradition. If you're drawn to nature, photography, or Australian heritage, this book is a gem. Pippos also authored other works like Shades of Ochre and Beneath the Southern Cross, continuing his exploration of South Australia's visual poetry.
