Im Zentrum dieser Aufstände, die Otto vorübergehend in den Zustand einer nicht zu überwindenden Lähmung versetzten, sieht man stets Heinrich, den jüngeren Bruder Ottos. Dessen ehrgeizige Nachfolgebestrebungen sollten ihm ein Recht zurückgeben, was ihm seiner Ansicht nach zu Unrecht verwehrt worden war: das Recht auf die Königswürde. Diese Arbeit will in diesem Zusammenhang wichtigen Fragen nachgehen: Warum wurde Otto und nicht Heinrich zum Thronfolger ernannt Mit welcher Legitimation versuchte Heinrich dennoch die Krone zu erlangen Und warum konnten seine Nachfolgebestrebungen letztlich nicht erfolgreich sein Die Quellenlage für den zu behandelnden Zeitraum ist breit gefächert - allerdings ist es oft schwierig zu entscheiden, was Wirklichkeit, was Topos, was Tatsache und was übertragenes Geschehen ist.
