Softcover. Condition: Very Good. When Jim Gatchell opened The Buffalo Pharmacy in 1900, the drugstore had an immediate impact on the Johnson County community. Bringing in people from far and wide, Jim enjoyed getting to know his customers and befriended many. Famous Army scouts, cowboys, settlers, cattle barons, and lawmen would… all frequent the pharmacy sharing with Jim their stories of life, work, and war. Before landing in Buffalo, Wyoming, Jim had grown up on a Lakota reservation and was fluent in the Lakota language. Through this and his caring nature, he became a trusted friend of the regions Native Americans. They brought him many gifts throughout the years including guns, war bonnets, tools, medicine bags, bows, arrows, and clothing. As word about the gifts got out, local residents began donating mementos of historic names, places, and events from Johnson County. All of the artifacts Jim received have a unique role in telling of the culture and history of Johnson County. After Jim Gatchells death in 1954, his family generously donated his vast collection to the people of Johnson County with the provision that a museum be built to house it. After three years of fundraising, the museum was established in 1957. The original museum was founded 1957 and focuses on Johnson County and frontier history. The museum's dioramas feature historic events and life along the Bozeman Trail, including the Wagon Box Fight, the Johnson County War between ranchers in the 1890s, the siege at the TA Ranch and a view of Buffalo's Main Street in 1894. Artifacts include frontier and military weapons, wagons, Native American artifacts, ranching gear, and household and historic items. The grounds include a two-room furnished log cabin.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Buffalo, the county seat of Johnson County in northeastern Wyoming, began in 1878 as an army town adjacent to Fort McKinney (1877-1894). Since that foundation was laid, Buffalo has been witness to gold prospectors and settlers as a waypoint along the Bozeman Trail, nearby battles during the…ensuing Indian Wars, and the Cattle War of 1892. Those events and their associated hard times helped forge the town's unique heritage and culture and made its place in American history significant. It was recently referred to as "an epicenter of Western frontier history" by local museum educator Bob Edwards. Buffalo's site, at the boundary between the Big Horn Mountains and the Northern High Plains, is not only historic but particularly beautiful, and it also provides superb grasslands for cattle and sheep ranching. Those industries, plus mining, lumbering, and tourism, make up the community's present-day economy.
