Oversize Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. Exhibition catalog for a show held at the publisher's gallery and the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire. Book is in excellent condition with creaseless covers and spine, very light edge and corner wear as the only flaws. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no notable blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. 285 pp, 61 bw and 77 color plates. Many full page and beautiful and well-annotated color plates: portraits, animals and horses in particular. The catalog for a 1989 Tate Gallery exhibition presenting the first major retrospective of the Geneva-born painter who settled in London, covering his portraits of horses, exotic animals, rural scenes, and figures in landscape, with essays situating him in relation to Stubbs and the English Neoclassical tradition. Töpffer (1766 -1847) war vor allem in Genf (und in seiner Umgebung Savoyen und Waadt) und Paris tätig, u.a. als Zeichenlehrer von Kaiserin Joséphine. Von Napoléon wurde er mehrfach ausgezeichnet. Er erlangt heute mehr und mehr die Hochachtung, die ihm bereits zeit seines Lebens erstrangige Sammler aus ganz Europa entgegenbrachten. Der vom Kunsthistoriker Lucien Boissonnas erarbeitete Werkkatalog der Gemälde gibt Einblick in das vielseitige Schaffen dieses bemerkenswerten Genfer Künstlers, das hinsichtlich der thematischen Vielfältigkeit sowie der von ihm eingesetzten Techniken den Vergleich mit den Besten seiner Zeit nicht zu scheuen braucht. Einer der innovativsten Aspekte von Töpffers Malerei sind die Pleinair-Landschaften, wo er als Vorläufer eines Landschaftsgenres gelten kann, welches später den Ruhm von Corot und der Schule von Barbizon begründen sollte, und seine Karikaturen haben Töpffer seinerzeit den Beinamen ' Hogarth de Genève ' eingebracht.
