    Cette première description du Pliensbachien inférieur de la Vendée (France) est permise par l'étude d'une nouvelle coupe située sur la commune du Bernard et, pour comparaison, de cinq autres coupes de Vendée littorale et de Vendée méridionale. L'étude stratigraphique de détail est précisée ainsi que le contexte sédimentologique, paléoécologique et paléogéographique local. Les ammonites y sont remarquablement diversifiées. Quatre vingt dix huit taxons d'ammonites distincts sont décrits et illustrés dans cet ouvrage. Cette étude a permis une nouvelle définition de plusieurs taxons. Deux sont érigés au rang d'espèce nouvelle : Uptonia atlantica nov. sp., qui prolonge dans la Sous-Zone à Masseanum le clade monophylétique des Uptonia ; Aegoceras truemani nov. sp., première espèce d'Aegoceras de la Zone à Davoei. Plusieurs autres, qui étaient peu connus et peu utilisés, sont réhabilités, tels Platypleuroceras amplinatrix, Acanthopleuroceras quadratum et Uptonia regnardi dont un néotype est ici désigné. Une nouvelle interprétation de l'espèce Uptonia jamesoni est proposée. La résolution biostratigraphique autorisée, notamment par la coupe du Bernard, a permis de répartir les ammonites du Pliensbachien inférieur en 23 biohorizons distincts qui sont corrélés avec la biozonation standard en vigueur dans la Province nord-ouest-européenne. Dans leur grande majorité, les peuplements d'Ammonitina vendéennes sont clairement représentatifs de la Province paléobiogéographique nord-ouest européenne. De rares espèces, dites ubiquistes (Lytoceras, Becheiceras), atteignent la Vendée sous forme de plusieurs ingressions fauniques brèves, oligospécifiques mais riches en individus. Un seul taxon d'affinité nettement téthysienne les accompagne : Radstockiceras gemmellaroi. L'originalité des associations est cependant marquée par la présence, dans la Zone à Ibex, de plusieurs taxons considérés à ce jour comme représentatifs de l'endémisme lusitanien, Acanthopleuroceras carinatum atlanticum (Mouterde et al., 1983), Uptonia atlantica nov. sp, Dayiceras dayiceroides (Mouterde, 1951), qui sont pour la première fois signalés en dehors du Portugal. La présence de ces ammonites est induite par une configuration paléogéographique locale favorable aux échanges et aux migrations de faune. Elle témoigne de la large ouverture de la marge vendéenne du Bassin d'Aquitaine sur les bassins proto-atlantiques plus occidentaux que les reconstitutions palinspastiques décrivent comme proches. Elles remettent en cause l'existence d'un endémisme purement lusitanien, au Lias, et suggèrent un particularisme « atlantique » élargi à l'ensemble des bassins proto-océaniques de l'Europe occidentale et à leurs marges. 275 pp., 60 color plates and num. figs, br. 4.
