Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm stereo vinyl record album, Liberty LST-7448, near-mint vinyl in a near-mint cardboard jacket which has been opened but still wears its original plastic wrap, offering covers of some early '60s tunes not otherwise commonly available in stereo. "Bobby Vee" (Robert Thomas Velline, son of the chef, piano- and fiddle-player Sydney Velline), born of Norwegian and Finnish heritage in Fargo, North Dakota, in April of 1943, is sometimes dismissed as one of the manufactured "teen idols" of the late 1950s and early '60s, quickly eclipsed by the new wave of guitarists and singer-songwriters led by Bob Dylan and the Beatles. But that's not quite fair. On Feb. 3, 1959, "The Day the Music Died," three of the four headline acts in the lineup of the traveling Winter Dance Party -- Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson -- were killed in the crash of a V-tailed 1947 Beechcraft Bonanza. (Dion DiMucci, the fourth headliner, opted not to travel on the plane, citing the cost. Guitarist Waylon Jennings gave up his seat to Richardson, who had the flu. Holly's other backup guitarist, Tommy Allsup, lost his seat to Valens on a coin toss.) The small plane crashed near Clear Lake, Iowa, en route to the next show on the itinerary, in Moorhead, Minnesota. In 1963, Vee released a tribute album on Liberty Records titled "I Remember Buddy Holly." In the jacket notes, he recalled Holly's influence and the events surrounding Holly's death, describing how he had looked forward to attending the concert, how the local radio station put out a call for local talent to fill in after the disaster, and how Vee's recently-organized high-school group, modeled on Holly's style, responded to the call, making up a name for themselves ("The Shadows") on the spot. Faced with the unenviable job of filling in for Holly and his band at the Moorhead engagement, the kids were a success, and they were noticed. Early in Vee's resulting career, a musician calling himself Elston Gunn briefly toured with Vee's band. Gunn's real name was Robert Allen Zimmerman; he subsequently recorded and toured as "Bob Dylan." Dylan later recalled that Vee "had a metallic, edgy tone to his voice and it was as musical as a silver bell." Vee in turn allowed as how the musician he knew as Gunn "played pretty good in the key of C." In a concert at Midway Stadium in St. Paul on July 10, 2013, Dylan said he'd been onstage with many stars, "But the most beautiful person I've ever been on the stage with, was a man who is here tonight." Dylan and the band then played Vee's song "Suzie Baby." Bobby Vee (1943-2016) scored six gold records in the early 1960s, including "Devil or Angel" (1960), "Rubber Ball" (1961), "Take Good Care of My Baby" (1961), and "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" (1962). None, unfortunately, are featured on this disc, though the pop crooner does cover The Knickerbockers' marvelous "Lies," Gary Lewis and the Playboys' "Save Your Heart for Me," and "Count Me In" (though most of the credit for those hits could probably go to producer Snuff Garrett and arranger Leon Russell), The Yardbirds' "For Your Love," Gene Pitney's "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," Rick Nelson's "Travelin' Man," Johnny Burnette's "You're Sixteen" (before Ringo), and Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas' "Bad to Me" (a tune given away to their Brian Epstein stable-mates by Lennon & McCartney.) Cover stories on Paul Newman, Bobby Vee and Anthony Milano. The numbering of the volumes is illogical in the beginning years up to about 1971. "After Dark" was originally "Ballroom Dance Magazine" which ended with its volume 9, #4. The new magazine's first issue continued the numbering of the previous magazine and so issue #1 is stated as volume 10, #1. By the third year of the magazine they changed the numbering from volume 13 to volume 3, #9. A fine magazine of arts, stage, dance and music that bridged the gap between gay and straight readers in the 1970s-80s.
