First edition of this biography of a United States founding father; from the library of Philemon Tecumseh Sherman. Octavo, original navy blue cloth, frontispiece portrait of Roger Sherman, illustrated with seven black and white documents, photographs, and illustrations. P.T. Shermanâs bookplate to the front pastedown beneath his ownership signature. In very good condition. General William Tecumseh Shermanâs son P.T. Sherman was a lawyer in New York, specializing in labor and insurance, and was elected a member of the New York Board of Alderman in the late 1880s. In the early 1900s, he was appointed the New York Commissioner of Labor. He transferred his library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria âMinnieâ Ewing Sherman Fitch, before he died. Until now, the book was held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Roger Sherman was an early American statesman, lawyer, and a Founding Father of the United States. In addition to signing the 1774 Petition to the King, he is the only person to have signed all four great state papers of the United States: the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution.
