Paperback. Condition: Good. On 28th April 1789 a small and unremarkable merchant vessel became one of the most famous ships in maritime history. HMS Bounty was under the command of 34-year-old Lieutenant William Bligh, an inexperienced commander who lacked the respect of a crew attracted to the promise of an easy life in a Tahitian paradise.Fletcher Christian led half the crew in mutiny against Bligh and after overpowering all resistance, they cast their deposed captain adrift along with those still loyal to him. Luckily for Bligh, his skills as a navigator were better than his skills as a captain and he managed to sail the 23ft boat 3,618 nautical miles to Timor in the Dutch East Indies with no chart or compass, and only a quadrant and a pocket watch for navigation. On returning to England he reported what had happened, and the Royal Navy hunted down and captured most of the mutineers. However, this is only half the story ? William Bligh?s version. The captured mutineers went on trial and their testimonies give a much less heroic portrait of their former captain, accusing him of unduly harsh treatment. Fletcher Christian?s older brother Edward, a judge, oversaw a more balanced account of the mutiny. Of the mutineers who returned to England, only three were hanged; four were acquitted and three pardoned. This book gives the fullest version of the mutiny, allowing Bligh's account to sit alongside those of his detractors. The discrepancies are fascinating, and allow us to make up our own minds about this infamous mutiny. Also includes an exclusive Foreword by former World Sailor of the Year Pete Goss, who offers a unique perspective on the trials and tribulations of the Bounty's crew, whether castaway or mutineer.…

Previous Owner's Name Penned in Front, Otherwise Very Good in Wrappers. 0451500946. Afterword By Milton Rugoff. 240 pages. paperback. CP94. keywords: Signet Classic Paperback Maritime The Sea Autobiography England History. DESCRIPTION - The most celebrated mutiny in the annals of the sea and the subsequent 3,600-mile South Sea voyage in an open boat were recorded by William Bligh, the Bounty's beleaguered master, amidst all the perils he underwent. A resentful crew, ravaging storms, savages, uncharted archipelagoes - elements of high adventure in themselves - are merely stages leading up to the anxiety-charged ordeal to come. In this deeply personal, yet objective narrative based upon his ship's log, Bligh documents the voyage of the Bounty and his relationship to his men - thereby posing the endlessly debated question of what manner of man he really was: sadistic disciplinarian of sensitive youth? Or a stern but just captain, a superb seaman, the victim of a rash young man made frantic by the loss of an island paradise? inventory #32351 Previous Owner's Name Penned in Front, Otherwise Very Good in Wrappers.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. BLIGH, William. A Voyage to the South Sea, Undertaken by Command of His Majesty, for the Purpose of Conveying the Bread-Fruit Tree to the West Indies, in His Majesty's Ship the Bounty; Including an Account of the Mutiny on Board the Said Ship, and the Subsequent Voyage of Part of the Crew, in the Ship's Boat, from Tofoa to Timor. London: Printed for George Nicol, Bookseller to His Majesty, Pall-Mall, 1792. First edition of the full account of the voyage of HMS Bounty, the mutiny led by Fletcher Christian, and William Bligh's remarkable open-boat voyage to Timor. With an additional eighteenth-century engraved chart of Pitcairn Island, later the refuge of the mutineers. Quarto. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Captain William Bligh by J. Condé after John Russell; illustrated with seven further engraved plates, charts and plans, including folding material: the plan and section of the Bounty fitted for the transport of breadfruit plants, the plan of the ship's launch, the plate of the breadfruit tree and charts relating to the voyage. Bligh's A Voyage to the South Sea is the first full published account of the expedition that gave rise to the most famous mutiny in maritime history. HMS Bounty sailed for Tahiti to gather breadfruit plants for transplantation to the West Indies. After months at Tahiti, the ship departed with its living cargo; on 28 April 1789, near the Friendly Islands, Fletcher Christian and his supporters seized the vessel and forced Bligh and eighteen loyal men into the ship's launch. With very limited provisions, Bligh navigated the crowded open boat across thousands of miles of ocean to Timor, an achievement that established his reputation as a navigator. His account is both an official defence of his command and one of the central narratives of maritime survival. The work followed Bligh's shorter Narrative of the Mutiny, published in 1790. The present volume gives the full history of the expedition, incorporating a revised account of the mutiny, prepared from Bligh's journal by Captain James Burney under the supervision of Sir Joseph Banks while Bligh was absent on his second breadfruit voyage. Of particular appeal is the accompanying loose engraved plate, "A Chart and Views of Pitcairn's Island," originally issued with Hawkesworth's account of Captain Philip Carteret's discovery of the island in 1767. In 1790 Fletcher Christian and the remaining mutineers reached Pitcairn and founded the remote settlement in which they hoped to evade discovery. The contemporary chart gives this copy a compelling visual connection with the final chapter of the Bounty story. Binding and Condition Bound in period half calf over marbled boards, the spine ruled and lettered in gilt "Bligh's Voyage." Housed in a later fitted brown leather solander box, lettered in gilt "Bligh's Voyage to the South Sea." Binding rubbed, with scuffing to the marbled boards and wear at the spine ends and joints, but remaining sound and attractive. Internally with foxing and some staining, particularly to the portrait and title-page opening, together with occasional offsetting and age-toning to the folding plates and charts. The engraved material remains striking, especially the plan of the Bounty fitted for the breadfruit plants. The accompanying Pitcairn chart shows some staining and handling wear, but presents well. A highly desirable first edition of Bligh's account of the Bounty expedition and mutiny, enhanced by the additional contemporary engraved chart of Pitcairn Island and preserved in a fitted leather box. An important book for a collection of maritime history, Pacific exploration, Tahiti, Pitcairn Island or HMS Bounty. References: Ferguson 125; Hill 135; Sabin 5910; Wantrup 62a.
