Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is an extract from a devotional text written in 1533 and is a rich source of Marian imagery and religious symbolism for use in personal prayer and meditation. The author draws on biblical passages to illustrate their points in the belief that the Virgin Mary is a source of co…mfort and inspiration. The first part of the text focuses on the idea of Mary's immaculate conception and her role as a mediator between God and humanity. It also explores the idea that Mary's grace and favor can be accessed through prayer and devotion. The second part of the text consists of a series of prayers and devotions that are designed to help the reader develop a closer relationship with Mary. The book provides a glimpse into the rich devotional life of medieval Christians and offers insights into the role of art and ritual in the expression of religious belief. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

These spiritual exercises are inspired by seventy crucified martyrs. The final section is devoted to women. Most profiles are drawn from ancient history, but they include THE ANDROGYN…OUS MEDIEVAL FOLK SAINT WILGEFORTIS, who grew a beard to avoid an unwanted marriage and was crucified by her father. Among contemporary figures are THE TWENTY-SIX MARTYRS OF JAPAN EXECUTED IN 1597 AND THE JAPANESE CHRISTIAN MAGDALENA MINAMI, crucified with Joanna and Agnes Takeda in 1603 at Yatsushiro. An engraving illustrates each martyrdom. Moretus purchased the plates (cut for Ricci's 1608 Triumphus Iesu Christi crucifixi) and had them retouched by Karel van Mallery. To settle a dispute over pricing, Moretus sent Bivero an additional two leaf gathering - present here - for the author to insert in his twenty-four personal copies. Very good condition (scattered spots), from the libraries of Robert Hoe (1839-1909, morocco booklabel and gilt monogram, Catalogue (1911) 383), Thomas Jefferson Coolidge, Jr. (1831-1920, bookplate) and David Godine (bookplate).
