However, with increased population pressure overexploitation and extraction of natu…ral resource base is increased. While considering its importance and services, it is required to understand the status of forested land considering both structure and function of forests. Therefore, study is undertaken in tropical dry deciduous forests of Purulia district, West Bengal, India which is also not an exception of destruction causing loss of forest cover, converting large forest patch into smaller ones. The aim of the study is to understand the effects of habitat fragmentation and loss of biodiversity. The study reveals high biotic pressure in the area causing fragmentation and subsequent loss of plant and animal species with unstable vegetal structure. Species diversity is lowered compared to other forests. Research work also depicts improper nutrient cycling in the smaller fragmented patches. 152 pp. Englisch.

In Anbetracht der Bedeutung und der Leistungen des Waldes ist es erforderlich, den Zustand der bewaldeten Flächen unter Berücksichtigung von Struktur und Funktion der Wälder zu verstehen. Aus diesem Grund wird die Studie in den tropischen trockenen Laubwäldern des Distrikts Purulia in Westbengalen, Indien, durchgeführt, der auch keine Ausnahme von der Zerstörung ist, die zum Verlust der Waldfläche führt und große Waldflächen in kleinere umwandelt. Ziel der Studie ist es, die Auswirkungen der Lebensraumfragmentierung und des Verlusts der biologischen Vielfalt zu verstehen. Die Studie zeigt, dass der hohe biotische Druck in dem Gebiet zu einer Fragmentierung und einem daraus resultierenden Verlust von Pflanzen- und Tierarten mit instabiler Vegetationsstruktur führt. Die Artenvielfalt ist im Vergleich zu anderen Wäldern geringer.
