Von Halina Birenbaum, ein Zeugnis des Holocaust und zugleich ein Beweis für die Unvergänglichkeit von meist menschlichen Gefühlen: Hoffnung, Liebe für die Welt und das Leben in jeder Form. „Die Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt" ist schon eine „klassische" und seit Jahren wichtige Position in der Literatur über… den Holocaust. Das Buch erzählt in einfacher aber rührender Sprache über Erfahrungen der Autorin, die zum Zeitpunkt des Ausbruches des Zweiten Weltkrieges 10 Jahre alt war und Schülerin einer Warschauer Grundschule war. Im September 1939 lebte sie mit ihren Eltern und Brüdern in der Nowiniarska-Straße in Warschau. Nach dem Kriegsausbruch wurde die ganze Familie ins Ghetto übersiedelt. Durch einige Zeit verbarg sie sich in einem Bunker, in der Miła-Straße 3. Im Mai 1943 wurde sie ins Konzentrationslager Majdanek ausgefahren, dann nach Auschwitz. Die Befreiung hat sie im Lager Neustadt-Glewe erlebt, wo sie nach der Lagergehenna von Auschwitz und Ravensbrück kam. Den meisten aus ihrer nächsten Familie gelang es nicht, den Krieg zu überleben. Im Jahre 1986 wurden 30 Seiten „Aufbruch in die Vergangenheit" nachgeschrieben. Hier beschreibt sie Eindrücke nach den besuchten Orten, wo sie ihre Kindheit verbrachte und grausamste Momente während der Besatzungszeit erlebte. Wie die Autorin selbst sagt: „Meine erste Reise nach Polen habe ich nach vierzig Jahren zurückgelegt und sie den 'Aufbruch in die Vergangenheit — Polen 1986' genannt. Diese Reise brachte viel in mein Leben. Und nicht nur in meins, weil unser älterer Sohn Yakov Gilad zusammen mit dem Komponisten und Sänger Yehuda Poliker dann eine seiner besten Platten ‚Asche und Staub' geschaffen hat. Er hat ein schönes Lied geschrieben: Dorthin, wo du fährst/wartet niemand/ Ewigkeit, es ist nur /Asche und Staub.".
