Raised in central Missouri, he lived as an itinerant painter in St. Louis and, as a mature artist, in Independence and Kansas City. Working before America's vastness was made manageable by a web of roads and railways, Bingham found his subjects in the trappers and boatmen who populated his state's great rivers, the Missouri and the Mississippi. He also depicted social and political life of what was then still the frontier, preserving with timeless, classic dignity the features and spirit of the American democracy. Piece(s) of the spine missing. Due to age and/or environmental conditions, the pages of this book have darkened. Mylar protector included.
