Each volume: Hardback large octavo, dustjacket, very condition (in very good dustjacket), top edge little foxed, pages lightly toned, minor edgewear, bookshop sticker (v1 only). 324 pp. John Thomas Bigge was the Commissioner appointed by the Home Office (after receiving complaints) to enquire into the transportation system of sending convicts to New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land, and their settlement under Governor Lachlan Macquarie. His two-volume report in 1822 - 1823 generated considerable controversy, and has been considered as the major issue for the future development of the Australian colonies. The ISBN 0855610271 applies to the 2-volume set: Volume 1: The Oral Evidence [and] Volume 2: The Written Evidence. The editor, Dr John Ritchie, a lecturer in history at the Australian National University (ANU), also wrote a revealing background report about Commissioner Bigge called 'Punishment and Profit' (based on his ANU PhD thesis).

Uncommon with only 5 copies in on-line COPAC. Two leaves (gathering H) are lightly embrowned as is relatively common with the occasional use of inferior paper by printers.

Major Sir Algernon Tudor-Craig 1873-1943 was a British Army officer, heraldist and author of various works on art history, especially armorial porcelain. Tudor-Craig was an officer in the 4th (militia) battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles. He served as Instructor of Musketry with the 8th Provisional Battalion in 1902. From an album of his letters.
