Man nimmt gewöhnlich an, daß der Gedanke, eine Hütte oder ein Haus zu bauen, nur dem Mangel an natürlichem Schutz oder aber dessen Unvermögen entsprang, Wohnbedürfnissen hinreichend zu genügen. Auch die Zunahme der Bevölkerung spielte sicherlich eine gewichtige Rolle. Aber ist es nicht denkbar, daß die Höhlenbewohner von Altamira, Lascaux, Ariege und Pena de Candamo, die begabte Maler waren, nicht auch fähig gewesen sein sollen, sich zu Baumeistern zu entwickeln, wenn die Notwendigkeit dies erfordert hätte? Nun, sei dem, wie es sei, die Menschen der vorgeschichtlichen Zeit jedenfalls müssen die Höhle als eine durchaus annehmbare Behausung empfunden haben, und gewissermaßen selbstverständlich konzentrierte sich ihr erwachender Wille zu bildnerischer Betätigung auf die Höhlenwände. Dort bemächtigten sie sich im Abbild ihrer Umwelt, wozu vor allem das jagdbare Wild gehörte. Gedanken und Wünsche gewannen für sie greifbare Realität durch die beschwörende Zauberkraft der Linien und Farben. Band 11: Eine im eigentlichen Sinne holländische Kunst, selbständig aus der gemütvoll-poetischen Lebensauffassung der nördlichen Niederlande erwachsen, bildete sich erst verhältnismäßig spät heraus, in der Baukunst nicht vor der Mitte des 13., in der Malerei erst zu Begiim des 15. Jahrhunderts. Claus Sluter, ein Bildhauer, hatte maßgebhdien Anteil an der Schaffung der Voraussetzungen, unter denen sich die Kunst der Niederlande entwickelte. In Haarlem geboren, erhielt er seine Ausbildung in den südlichen Niederlanden, in Brüssel; danach ließ er sich im burgundischen Dijon nieder.
