Diritto e giustizia, nel pensiero dell'Alighieri, sono naturalmente inscindibili ed entrambi sono manifestazione della volontà divina. Attraverso la Commedia, inoltre, il poeta pronuncia un'energica esortazione a ritrovare l'unità e la carità, nel superamento delle divisioni, dei dissidi, dell'invidia e della sopraffazione. Nel volume, dopo una contestualizzazione storica e culturale della figura e dell'opera dantesca, si apre una riflessione sul tema della giustizia in rapporto al diritto, alla politica, alla religione e alla teologia, con lo scopo ultimo di spiegare e mettere in risalto il pensiero giuridico dell'Alighieri, pienamente comprensibile soltanto alla luce di un'analisi che tenga conto della profonda religiosità e dell'autentica fede del poeta, come professata nel canto XXIV del Paradiso.
