Cities of Canada: Reproductions from the Seagram Collection of Paintings was published by The House of Seagram of Toronto in 1953 as both an exhibition catalogue and a promotional volume. It runs to 56 pages in softcover with stapled wraps, measuring approximately 8.5 by 7 inches, with 26 full-page colour reproductions of the commissioned paintings. A foreword was written by Samuel Bronfman, President of The House of Seagram. The commentary throughout is by Bernard K. Sandwell, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Copies were issued with a Seagram's gift card, and the volume was produced for distribution at and following the touring exhibition. The Thunder Bay Museum holds a copy in its library collection. The collection originated in 1951 when Samuel Bronfman commissioned twenty-two Canadian artists to paint the cities of Canada — a deliberate act of corporate cultural patronage framed explicitly as a national project. The stated goal was to bring to the peoples of the world some glimpses of the Canadian landscape and skyline, in particular views of Canada's cities rising from its seacoasts, in the midst of its plains, and at the foot of its mountains. An international touring exhibition of the resulting paintings was organized for 1953-54, travelling the Americas and Europe, followed by a cross-Canada tour in 1954-55. The collection toured again in 1964 and made its final major public appearance during Centennial Year in 1967. The artists commissioned were among the leading Canadian painters of the period, and included Charles Comfort, Walter Phillips, York Wilson, A.J. Casson, A.C. Leighton, A.Y. Jackson, and Goodridge Roberts, among others. The twenty-five cities depicted span the country from coast to coast, and the catalogue reproductions give the volume its primary value as a visual record of Canada's urban centres as they appeared in the early 1950s — a moment of postwar growth and civic confidence that the paintings reflect with varying degrees of idealization. Bernard Keble Sandwell (1876-1954) was a Toronto journalist and editor, best known as editor of Saturday Night magazine, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and one of the most prominent voices in Canadian cultural life of the mid-twentieth century. His commentary essay, titled Canada: Country of the Twentieth Century, situates the cities within a broad argument about Canadian national identity and urban development. His individual notes on each city carry the specificity of engaged local knowledge: his observation on Windsor, that the American Revolution separated it from Detroit but the two remain almost a single city in two nations, illustrates the kind of historical and social acuity he brings to what might otherwise have been promotional description.…
