Condition: Very good. - Humorist Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber's autographed inscription on a 4 inch high by 6-3/4 inch wide light blue page from an autograph album. The inscription reads: "B.P. Shillaber with accompanying regards of 'Mrs. Partington'. Chelsea, May 25, 1878". The left edge of the page is slightly rough. Very good. The American printer, editor and humorist Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber (1814-1890) often wrote under the pseudonym of his fictional character "Mrs. Partington". After first working for a printing office, Shillaber moved to Boston where he became an editor for the Boston Daily Post and the Saturday Evening Gazette. He introduced the character Mrs. Ruth Partington at the Post. With the help of Charles G. Halpine, Shillaber became the founding editor of the humor magazine "The Carpet-Bag". Both Mark Twain & Ward sent their first contributions to the periodical. Indeed 16 year old Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain) contributed his short article "The Dandy Frightening the Squatter" which saw publication in the May 1, 1852 issue of "The Carpet-Bag". Not only does Twain later refer to Mrs. Partington in his book "Roughing It", but Shillaber's character Ike Partington (Mrs. Partington's nephew) may have inspired Twain's character "Tom Sawyer".…

Karpman writes to Freudian psychiatrist and expert in criminology Dr. Arthur Foxe entreating him to write an article for the Archives and also to contribute a guest editorial. The main body of the letter reads: 'Dear Sir, | You really must excuse my incurring any such responsibility as that you would impose upon me. I am unable to controul Mr. Webster's actions and do not see why I should take upon myself a risk in a matter in which I have no possible interest.' Mathews has added subsequently, in a smaller hand: '(especially as my private belief is that Mr Webster never reads the pieces at all. He has at least half a dozen in hand at this moment that I know of.)'.…

The recipient is 'Henry Spicer Esq', presumably a relation of the artist of the same name (d.1804; see ODNB), several of whose theatrical portraits are in the Garrick Club collection. Webster has been given 'infinite pleasure' by his 'generous offer': 'Be assured the Dramatic College is a most prosperous institution & well deserving your patronage.' He asks him to 'call at our offices 15 Bedford Street Covent Garden', where he will 'see a full confirmation of what I state'. In a postscript he asks him to allow Webster to 'announce this extra Godsend this week. The cost does not exceed £250 as per agreement'.…

The edges of the soiled covers are heavily chipped with several short tears and the spine is splitting. 14 pages. The edges of several pages are slightly chipped and there is a tear to the top edge of the pages. Good. RARE. The American publisher and politician Benjamin Wood (1820-1900) was the brother of U.S. Congressman and New York City Mayor Fernando Wood. He purchased the New York Daily News in 1860 but was shut down when the government suspended delivery through the postal system due to its support of the Confederacy. He was able to re-open the paper in 1863 and printed personal columns which the War Department claimed were used by Confederate spies to send coded communication to Confederate forces. Wood was elected as a U.S. Congressman from New York in 1861 serving until 1865. He subsequently served as a New York State Senator before being re-elected to the U.S. Congress.…

Condition: Good. - Over 60 words penned on 5-1/2 inch high by 7-1/2 inch wide light blue paper. In his letter to John Huntington Butler, Benjamin Park, Sr. writes that he is staying in "a large house opposite the Park" and is "much happier in most respects than when in New York." He suggests the Butler come see him when he is "up at the Atheneum some day." He wants Butler to "ask Mr. Folsom for his latest catalogue and send it to me". Signed "Park Benjamin". An early annotation at the bottom of the letter states "From Mr Butler". Once folded, creased and soiled, the letter is mounted onto heavier white stock cut out from an album. Good. The American poet, journalist and editor Park Benjamin Sr. (1809-1864) was the founder of several newspapers. Born in British Guiana, he was sent to New England and practiced law in Boston before moving on to editorial work in Boston and New York. He co-founded the literary journal "The Evening Tattler" with Rufus Wilmot Griswold. He and John Huntington Butler, to whom this letter is addressed, launched "The New World" in 1839. Benjamin counted Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe among his acquaintances and was once sued for libel by James Fenimore Cooper. Charles Folsom, who Park Benjamin mentions, ran the famous University Press in Cambridge, Massachusetts and "the house opposite the park" he mentions is where his son, the autograph dealer Walter Benjamin, was born.…

No Binding. Condition: Very Good. 'Israeli, Isaac (1766 -1848) British writer, scholar and man of letters. Best known for his essays, associations with other men of letters, and as the father of British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. Samuel Jackson Pratt (1749 - 1814) was a prolific English dramatist, poet, novelist, pamphleteer, actor and ordained Church of England minister, who often wrote and performed under the pseudonym "Courtney Melmoth." Some of his works are still published today. Although his reputation was tainted by scandal during his lifetime, he is today recognized as an early campaigner for Animal Rights and the first English writer to treat the American Revolution as a legitimate subject for literature. His first published writing, as "Rev Mr Pratt of Peterborough" was an elegy, entitled Partridges, which appeared in popular poetry collections through most of the 19th century. It is a 10-verse tale of a mother partridge praying for the safety of her chicks during the shooting season, and revealed Pratt's concern for animal welfare. He was described as "an esteemed and popular preacher" but by 1773 had become entangled in a scandalous love affair and left the church to become an actor. In the early 1770s, Pratt entered into a relationship with a lady who thereafter referred to herself as "Mrs Charlotte Melmoth." According to A History of The City of Brooklyn, Charlotte "had been duped into a sham marriage, while at boarding school, by a Mr. Pratt, and with him went upon the stage. The couple toured together unsuccessfully, and eventually had to resort to telling fortunes to make their living. In1777 they were in Paris, where they met Benjamin Franklin who lent the couple money. In 1793 Charlotte immigrated to United States where she gained a reputation as "The Grande Dame of Tragedy on the Early American Stage." In 1774 he appeared as Hamlet at the Covent Garden Theatre but his performance was judged a failure and after this he mostly gave up the stage and took to writing full-time. His first literary success was a poem entitled The Tears of A Genius, which attracted the attention of the reading public, and from then onwards he was able to make a living by writing. In 1776 he moved to Bath, became a bookseller, but soon tired of it. He made the acquaintance of the famous actress Mrs Siddons, for whom he would later write leading character parts in his plays, but later fell out with her after borrowing £500 from her husband and becoming offended when she asked him to repay it. In 1776 he scandalized the literary world with a novel, satirizing Lord Chesterfield, entitled The Pupil of Pleasure or The New System (Lord Chesterfield's) Illustrated, describing a fictional series of seductions in Buxton. Its licentious tone evoked letters of complaints and reviews expressing shock. In 1780 he published his novel Emma Corbett or, The Miseries of Civil War with two British protagonists, Emma and her British soldier lover, both captured by American rebels, released by George Washington to later die tragically. The novel passed through many editions in several languages. It is the first English novel dealing with the American Revolution. His first play, Joseph Andrews, was performed at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 1778, with the role of Fanny being played by Mary Robinson. His The Fair Circassian, first performed at Drury Lane 1781 had Miss Farren (later Countess of Derby) playing the lead. It was published in many editions, and is still in print today. Pratt was a keen campaigner against cruelty towards animals and an opponent of hunting and blood-sports. His poem Sympathy argues that man was "born to share" the earth with all other living creatures and asks "Why must man subsist by prey?" Lord Erskine, in his speech in support of the Bill for Preventing Malicious and Wanton Cruelty to Animals" (1809) said of Pratt, "Certainly [no living author has] expatiated more on this subject [cruelty to animals] than the Author of "Sympathy,".…
