Schelllackplatte 25 cm/78 UpM. Neues Pappcover. Platte gut (leichtere Oberflächenspuren bzw. -kratzer - keine tiefen Kratzer!). Erstpressung. Matrizen-Nrn. 850 BN II und 865 BN II. Berlin (1896-1944) war ein estnisch-jüdischer Jazz- und Unterhaltungsmusiker und Bandleader. Er studierte am Konservatorium St. Petersburg und erhielt drei Diplome (Komposition, Klavier und Dirigent). Nach der Oktoberrevolution verließ er 1920 Sowjetrussland und kehrte nach Tallin zurück, fand dort aber nur wenige Arbeitsmöglichkeiten (es gibt aber wohl auch Aufnahmen von ihm als klassischer Konzertpianist). Deshalb zog er nach Berlin und wurde dort 1926 bei der Schallplattenfirma Vox künstlerischer Direktor, Hauspianist und Arrangeur für Aufnahmesitzungen, u.a. für das Georges Boulanger Künstler Jazz Orchester. Ab 1928 nannte er sich Ben Berlin, wohl als Reminiszenz an die Stadt die ihn aufgenommen hatte, und gründete sein eigenes Tanzorchester. Er nahm mit diesem zahlreiche jazzorientierte Titel wie "Ain't Misbehavin'", "Can't Give You Anything But Love" u.a. auf - dabei beließ man bei Auslandspressungen die englischen Originaltitel, während man bei Inlandspressungen teils recht ulkige eingedeutschte Titel verwandte. Aber auch unzählige Aufnahmen mit Tagesschlagern und Filmsongs wie "Ein Freund, ein guter Freund" oder "Liebling, mein Herz läßt dich grüßen" u.a. wurden produziert. Lange, Jazz in Deutschland, S. 96 schrieb: "Obwohl Ben Berlins Orchester ein reines Tanzorchester war, brachte es gelegentlich gute Jazzsolistik zu Gehör, dank einiger hervorragender Solisten". Nach der NS-Machtergreifung emigrierte er zunächst in die Niederlande, dann über Österreich nach Paris und 1935 nach London. Zuvor besuchte er 1934 seine Heimat Estland und gab dort einige Konzerte mit klassischer Musik. In London arbeitete er dann ür die BBC als Leiter musikalischer Sendungen und trat unter seinem eigentlichen Namen auch wieder als Komponist in Erscheinung, konnte aber seine frühere Popularität nicht mehr wiedergewinnen. He was of Jewish extraction, and his sister Clara (1915-1942), a trumpeter praised by Louis Armstrong and the leader of an all-woman band, The Rosian Ladies, died at Auschwitz.
