Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. In the late 19th century Ozarks, a time of great social and economic upheaval, this book explores the coming-of-age of Alta, a young woman with a passion for botany. Despite the challenges of living in a patriarchal society that undervalues education, she demonstrates an unyielding determination to pursue her dreams of becoming a botanist. At a time when few women held such aspirations, this book humanizes the struggle for women in the sciences and their resilience in the face of adversity. It also explores the complex relationship between Alta and Mr. McLenden, a young artist who sees in her a kindred spirit and who is torn between his desire for her and his own artistic endeavors. Ultimately, this is a book about the power of dreams and the importance of not succumbing to the expectations of others, a timeless story of a young woman who shapes her own destiny in a world that is not always welcoming to her pursuits. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
