Small loosely inserted errata slip noting date of Einar Jonsson's death is wrongly stated to be 22 October 1954 when the correct date was 18 October 1954. Gift inscription on half title. Bookblock lightly cracked at introduction, but binding otherwise tight. Spine, covers & corners somewhat soiled & slightly worn with some staining to top back cover.; First edition of the principal mid-century monograph on the Icelandic sculptor Einar JÃ nsson (1874â"1954) , richly illustrated with photographic plates of his major works and an introductory text surveying his life and artistic career. The volume was issued jointly in ReykjavÃk and Stockholm to coincide with the consolidation of JÃ nssonâs reputation in his final years. Of particular interest is a contemporary presentation inscription on the front free endpaper, in English, from an Icelandic relative of the artist to an English-speaking friend and patron of Icelandic art. The inscription reads: âTo Ruth Jaffray the great lover of art in commemoration of ever memorable friendship of my country and my cousin and his grand art. With thanks for pleasant visits to Iceland and a great hospitality and generosity previously and later. From VigdÃs. âThe recipient, Ruth Jaffray, has not been traced in standard artistic reference works, but the tone of the inscription suggests a close mid-twentieth-century connection between an Icelandic member of JÃ nssonâs family (almost certainly the writer âVigdÃsâ) and a non-Icelandic admirer who had visited Iceland on more than one occasion and shown hospitality to the family abroad. The reference to âmy cousin and his grand artâ strongly implies that the cousin in question is Einar JÃ nsson himself, making this copy a small but evocative piece of personal documentation tying the sculptorâs immediate circle to an otherwise undocumented foreign friend of Iceland and of his work. An appealing association copy, linking the standard 1954 monograph on JÃ nsson with a named, but as yet unresearched, figure in his international circle of admirers.; Folio 13" - 23" tall. …
