Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Nonesuch Press, Bloomsbury, 1928. Small 8vo, pp. [vi], 51, [vi]. One of 1250 copies, this being 1025. All edges untrimmed, an unopened copy. Limp vellum parchment with pigskin thongs, small gilt-stamped decoration to front cover, gilt-stamped 'Beedome' to spine. Some rubbing to parchment. Front hinge cracked and unattached, binding starting. The verse of Thomas Beedome (d. 1641) includes love poems, elegies for such figures as his friend John Donne and Gustav Adolphus of Sweden, and religious works. Somewhat in the manner of Donne, they were published in 1641 after his death, and a pirated edition came out in 1657. Thereafter they languished until Meynell took an interest in them and edited them for this printing. The Nonesuch Press was founded in 1923 by typographer and book designer Francis Meynell (1891-1975) with the help of his friend David Garnett and his future wife, Vera Mendel. Meynell designed his books on a small Albion hand press, but had them printed commercially in order to keep the price of well-designed books made of quality materials within the means of readers and collectors who could not afford most private press editions.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'Select Poems Divine and Humane' is a compelling collection of verse by Thomas Beedome, a poet of the early 17th century whose work captures the spiritual and secular tensions of the Caroline era. The collection is organized into two distinct spheres: the divine, which encompasses poignant religious meditations and prayers, and the humane, which features elegies, epistles, and lyrical observations on the human condition.

Covers & spine somewhat smudged, discoloured & worn (see pictures) but gilt stamp still shiny. ; 20.1 x 12 x 0.7 cms; v, 51 pages; Poems Divine and Humane is the posthumous 1641 collection of Thomas Beedome, an English poet who died young, likely around 164041. The volume was edited by Henry Glapthorne and includes commendatory verses from various contemporaries, highlighting Beedome's literary promise. The collection is divided into two main sections: "humane" poems and "divine" poems. The "humane" section comprises a narrative poem titled The Jealous Lover, or, The Constant Maid, written in six-line stanzas, followed by songs, epistles, epigrams, elegies, and devotional poems. Notably, two epigrams are addressed to Sir Henry Wotton, another to George Wither, and others to friends such as William Harrington and Captain Thomas James. These poems reflect Beedome's engagement with his contemporaries and his literary environment. The "divine" section includes meditations on life, God, and death, drawing inspiration from poets like George Herbert. Beedome's religious poems are characterized by their introspective and contemplative nature. The collection as a whole showcases Beedome's versatility, encompassing themes of love, friendship, death, and spirituality. Despite his early death, Beedome's work was appreciated by his peers, and his poems were later included in anthologies of seventeenth-century poetry. His ability to blend personal emotion with broader themes of human experience has earned him a place among the lesser-known yet noteworthy poets of his time.
