Battey was a Quaker Missionary and school teacher to the Caddo and Kiowa tribes, who helped negotiate a settlement to the Modoc War. Battey lived with the Kiowa peoples for three years, writing down many of their customs and rituals. His journal and letters home form the basis of this narrative originally published in 1875.
