"Centenary Test refers to two matches of Test cricket played between the English cricket team and the Australian cricket team, the first in… 1977 and the second in 1980. These matches were played to mark the 100th anniversaries of the first Test cricket matches played in Australia (1877) and in England (1880) respectively. Neither match was played for The Ashes. The first Centenary Test was played in March 1977 to commemorate the match that is considered to be the first Test match, played in 1877. Both the 1877 and 1977 matches were played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Australia. Remarkably, Australia won both matches by exactly the same margin, 45 runs." (Wikipedia). Add to basket*Sales/posting to the USA suspended*. Card covers, large octavo, viii/90pp, b&w and colour photos. New copy. Biography of Flight Lieutenant Henry Lacy Smith, an Australian World War II fighter pilot whose remains were discovered, still in his Mk. IX Spitfire, in the Orne Estuary in Normandy in 2010. Lacy transferred from the arm…y to the RAAF in May 1941. Following initial training at Bradfield Park and Narrandera, he crossed the Pacific for training in Canada as a fighter pilot under the Empire Air Training Scheme. Graduating as dux of his course, Lacy served with Nos 66 and 132 Squadrons, RAF, before joining No 453 Squadron, RAAF. On Laughter-Silvered Wings reminds readers that fighter pilots were not constantly engaged in aerial warfare. Alongside duties that ranged from routine patrols and escorting bombers to attacking V-1 launch sites and developing new skills to support the invasion of Europe, Lacy Smith wondered and worried about his family in Sydney, enjoyed occasional spells of leave, and fell in love with the beautiful Edna Dorothy June Miller, whom he married in January 1943. He was reported as "missing but believed to have lost his life during afternoon 11th June 1944 as a result of air operations." On 19 April 2011, Flight Lieutenant Smith was laid to rest in Ranville War Cemetery, Normandy.
