Seller: Collinge & Clark, London, United Kingdom
First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Four volumes of varying size: three unpaginated collotype facsimiles of Red Books painted between 1792 and 1812 with a newly commissioned companion volume printed letterpress by the John Roberts Press with duo-tone sepia photographs by Eric de Mare. Quarter bound in scarlet chieftain goatskin, titled in gold. Boards covered in hand-marbled paper specially made for the edition in Sweden. Presented in a compartmented cloth slipcase (47 X 33 X 9.5cm). A fine copy. Humphry Repton showed his clients, who ranged from the Prince Regent to over three hundred private landowners, his proposals for improving their property in hand written Red Books illustrated with before-and-after views. These views, which consist of a watercolour painting with an overlay which shows the proposed change, were the basis for engraved books published during Repton's lifetime. No Red Book had been published before the Basilisk edition, which includes his major works: Antony House, Cornwall; Attingham Park, Shropshire and Sheringhall Hall, Norfolk. The companion volume shows the properties as they now appear and traces Repton's career and influence.
