Hardcover. Condition: Fine/Fine. Color-illus. boards with red lettering. Glossy, white dj with cut-out circles, showing board illus. underneath. 319 pp., 95 color plates and many additional images in color and black and white. Color plates and checklist of 95 works in the exhibition, six essays, a chronology and selected bibliog…raphy. This volume presents abstract Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). It reproduces scores of recently rediscovered paintings that had languished for decades in Soviet museums and in private collections. The author provides new details on Kandinsky's life and art, discussing his little-known experimental stage plays which strove for a synthesis of all the arts, and his friendships with Paul Klee, Arnold Schonberg and composer Thomas de Hartmann. Catalogue from the exhibition held at the Guggenheim September 2009 to January 2010. The same exhibition was shown prior to the Guggenheim in Munich and Paris, with separate catalogues, of different titles. This catalogue is in English only.

Softcover. Condition: VG+. BW illustrated glossy glued wraps, 170 pp., many BW illus., two fold-outs. Issued in conjunction with several 2000 exhibitions of portrait work by Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto (b. 1948). With five thematic and illustrated essays. Includes a chronology, exhibitions history, and bibliography. "…Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto is renowned for his elegant photographic series of seascapes, theaters, museum dioramas, and Buddhist statuary. His new series presents life-size, black-and-white portraits of historical figures -- Henry VIII and each of his wives, Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, Oscar Wilde, and Emperor Hirohito, among others -- photographed in wax museums, isolated against black backgrounds, and dramatically lit so as to create haunting Rembrandtesque images. The series, which also includes a 25-foot, five-panel photograph of a wax effigy of Leonardo's Last Supper, emulates the grand tradition of portraiture and recalls the wax figures' sources in famous paintings by Holbein, David, Van Dyck, and Vermeer."
