Critical redaction of observations on the Italian editorial notes by the papal physician, Giovanni Maria Lancisi on Bartolome Eustachi's 47 anatomical plates completed in 1552, but only first published in 1714 in their entirety in the Tabulae anatomicae (1714). The complete series were only re-discovered in the Vatican Library in 1714, when Pope Clement XI had them to be published at his expense by the dedicatée, Cardinal Pier Luigi Caraffa.The present redaction by the Roman anatomist Gaetano Petrioli (1720-60) includes Latin descriptions of the first 8 figures already published in 1564 and Lancisi's Italian notes for the complete series of the Tabulae anatomicae (p. 1-37 of the 99 page sequence) of figures 9-47. 39 plates numbered IX-XXXXVII by Lancisi are bound after p 32. Apart from his comments of Lancisi's notes, Petrioli describes his own experiences with dissections as well as his experiments on live animals; he adds a biography of Eustachi and notes on the anatomy of kidneys.Eustachi had written the first treatise specifically dedicated to the kidney. A few neat repairs without loss, occasional light foxing in outer edges of margins, some traces of usage, otherwise a good copy with a contemporary small heraldic ownership stamp in blank title margin. In-Folio (38 cm x 26 cm). Pp. 1 carta bianca, XXVIII, (11 di indice), 1 carta bianca. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida con doppio tassello sul dorso. Con 1 tavola realizzata all' acquaforte da Carlo Gregori su disegno di Niccolò Riccolini che raffigura il ritratto di Papa Clemente XI (Annibale Albani) cui l' opera è dedicata. Frontespizio stampato in rosso e nero con al centro una grande incisione raffigurante un teatro anatomico realizzata da Pier Leone Ghezzi. Con 47 superbe tavole anatomiche f.t. incise a piena pagina nel 1552 da Giulio de Musi su disegni dello stesso Autore e di Pier Matteo Pini che avrebbero dovuto corredare l' opera anatomica cui Eustachi dedicò i suoi sforzi senza tuttavia riuscire a terminarla. Una piccola parte dei commenti alle tavole fu pubblicata lui vivente, gli altri andarono perduti dopo la sua morte (1574). Le incisioni invece furono depositate nella Biblioteca Vaticana, dove furono rinvenute oltre un secolo e mezzo dopo da Giovanni Maria Lancisi che provvide a pubblicarle con i testi superstiti dell' Eustachi e a scriverne di nuovi a commento delle tavole che ne erano prive. Solo le due edizioni romane del 1714 e 1728 sono particolarmente pregiate poichè furono stampate direttamente dai rami originali, le altre (Amsterdam Leyda etc.) sono solo delle copie. Importante ex-libris del Prof. Vincenzo Maria Gallucci (1935-1991), l' illustre cardiochirurgo ferrarese che per primo eseguì un trapianto di cuore in Italia nella notte fra il 13 e 14 novembre 1985 presso l' ospedale civile di Padova. Qualche modesta ed insignificante fioritura sparsa al margine esterno di poche carte ma esemplare ad ampi margini in assai buono stato di conservazione generale. Seconda edizione (la prima era apparsa nel 1714) di una delle opere capitali nella storia della medicina e dell' odontoiatria, fondamentale la sua importanza per i primi studi sui reni, il sistema venoso, l' udito (con la scoperta della tromba di Eustachio) e i denti. L' A. descrisse inoltre il dotto toracico, le ghiandole surrenali e il nervo abducente, fornendo anche la prima descrizione accurata dell' utero. Ha anche descritto la coclea, i muscoli della gola e l' origine dei nervi ottici. Ğ Ces tables d' Eustachi sont a' beaucoup de points de vue plus exactes que les celebres planches de Vesale.
