A este Sotomayor más desconocido por el público también se añaden algunas de sus obras maestras más conocidas. Los textos de Javier Barón, comisario de la exposición y Jefe de Pintura del Siglo XIX en el Museo del Prado, y Pedro J. Martínez Plaza, coordinador y técnico de pintura del siglo XIX de la misma institución, nos dan una idea equilibrada de la obra de un pintor. La etapa chilena es desarrollada por el profesor de la Universidad de Talca, Pedro Emilio Zamorano Pérez.
