Willis Barnstone is a poet, and also renowned for his translations of Classical Greek poetry. Now he has tried his hand at translating the New Testament, which he calls The New Covenant, which is an exact translation of its Greek title: Kaine diatheke. He presents this foundational book of Christianity in a way that does full justice to its deep poetical qualities. Substantial parts of the Old Testament have long been recognised as verse rather than prose, and many translations have taken account of this. Barnstone goes much farther. In his New Covenant, which contains the four Gospels and the Apocalypse, but not the Acts and the Letters, he renders in free verse all the passages purporting to be Jesus's words -- for instance, the Sermon on the Mount. Similarly for the words of John the Baptist, and the whole of the Apocalypse (The Revelation of John). Many readers, like me, will find that the familiar texts appear in a new light. Barnstone's aim is to create in his English readers the same impression as the original Greek does to the Greek-speaking ones. Most of the many Jews in the cities of Egypt and Asia minor had at that time Greek as their mother tongue. One essential feature of Barnstone's translation of the New Covenant is to render all names of persons and places in its Hebrew or Aramaic form: Jesus (Greek Iesous) as Jeshua, Jerusalem as Yerushalayim. He underlines that the New Covenant is a Jewish book. Jesus was of course a Jew, and so were most of the early Christians. They were an integral part of the Jewish community, by now spread over most of the Eastern Mediterranean area. Contrasting Jews and Christians was a propagandist trick of later writers, who were eager to distance themselves from other Jew .Thus they planted the seeds of Christian anti-semitism. I think Barnstone has taken the right decision on this point. The book also contains a Foreword of some 20 pages, and an afterword of 120 pages, where Barnstone places his translation in the wider context of Biblical studies. Further, the book has footnotes explaining obscurities and various points of translation. But they are never obtrusive. In his comments Barnstone avoids polemics, and reveals himself as a well-informed and urbane liberal-minded scholar. He stresses that the gospel narratives find little or no confirmation in historical accounts. Somewhat surprisingly, he goes on to say that Jesus's crucifixion by the Roman authorities must be regarded as an established fact. This is certainly the opinion of the large majority of New Testament scholars. But there is by no means unanimity on this point. However, this is a minor matter. All in all, Barnstone succeeds extremely well in making his readers approach the New Testament with fresh eyes, shifting attention from points of doctrine and historicity, on to what is common to great religious poetry all over the world: its power to inspire feelings of hope and joy, and at the same time to convey a sense of the mystery of human existence. This is a superb achievement.

META-META-METACANONICAL: SUPERLATIVE: ELOQUENT: FRESH: LYRICAL: ELEGANT: WISE: MAGNIFICENT: MONUMENTAL: NEW First Edition hardcover (Orig. 2009) First Printing * 6.26" X 9.50" 2.0", 1.42 kg, xvii+1486 (1504) pp * ABOUT THE BOOK: From acclaimed scholar Willis Bar…nstone, "The Restored New Testament: A New Translation with Commentary, Including the Gnostic Gospels: Thomas, Mary, and Judas" . "Newly Translated from the Greek and Informed by Semitic Sources" . For the first time since the King James Version in 1611, Willis Barnstone has given us an amazing literary & historical version of the New Testament. Barnstone preserves the original song of the Bible, rendering a large part in poetry & the epic Revelation in incantatory blank verse. This monumental translation is the first to restore the original Greek, Aramaic, & Hebrew names (Markos for Mark, Yeshua for Jesus), thereby revealing the Greco-Jewish identity of biblical people & places. Citing historical & biblical scholarship, he changes the sequence of texts & adds 3 seminal Gnostic gospels. Ea. book has elegant introductions & is thoroughly annotated. W/ its superlative writing & lyrical wisdom, "The Restored New Testament" is a magnificent biblical translation for our age. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "Barnstone's new English version of the core texts of Christian scripture is almost startling in its freshness. Scraping away many centuries of stylistic fussiness & supersessionist distortion, he gives us a set of Gospel narratives that are bold & direct in their simplicity & that show how steeped the first Christina were in the Jewish world from which they derived." -Robert Alter. "Willis Barnstone's "The Restored New Testament" is both an eloquent, fresh translation of the Four Gospels & of Revelation, & also a superb act of restoration, in whIch these Christian scriptures are returned to their Judaic origins & context. The introductory material is wise & poignant, & makes an authentic contribution to the common reader's understanding of the gospels." -Harold Bloom * ABOUT THE AUTHOR-TRANSLATOR: WILLIS BARNSTONE, professor, poet, & scholar, is the author of 80 volumes, including "The Restored New Testament", "The Gnostic Bible", "The Poems of Jesus Christ", "The Poetics of Translation", & "Mexico in My Heart: New and Selected Poems". He lives in Oakland, California, & Paris. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL (or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee) & via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL for at-cost rates quoted upon request.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. This is a fine condition hard cover without flaws: appears previously unread. Unclipped dust jacket is also rated in fine condition, and is now enclosed in a (removable) mylar sleeve. "Including extensive notes, a glossary, and Testimonia from Sappho's admirer…s and critics from Plato to Plutarch." First Edition, with full number line present. 316 pages. QUOTED in relevant part from the dust jacket flap: "Though time has reduced the nine volumes of her work to a handful of complete poems and a collection of fragments, each word and phrase that survives is poignantly significant. The clarity of her voice, its absolute candor, its amazingly fresh authority - whether in addressing a goddess, dancers before a light altar, the moon and stars, a sweet apple or mountain hyacinth, a lamb or cricket, a love or companion - are qualities that compel us today as in antiquity. Willis Barnstone has given us a close and beautifully lyrical translation, with the original Greek on facing pages, that includes a dozen hitherto unintelligible fragments that have been brought vibrantly back to life by him, as well as Sappho's newly discovered poem from the Cologne papyrus in its complete form. The book also contains the translator's essay placing the poet in her historic and artistic context; a glossary; extensive notes; an epilogue and metrical guide by William E. McCulloh, Professor Emeritus of Classics at Kenyon College; and a special section of testimonia; appreciations of Sappho in the words of her ancient admirers." SHIPS from Eugene, Oregon, USA.
